Wrapping up my fix on this. I was able to fix my oil gauge reading. My oil gauge on the cluster pegged at max after engine start. It hits the stop at max. This is a different issue than what most people experience which is the gauge reading zero (this seems to be related to bad oil pressure...
From Heineken's reply above, 26 ohms should fall between 4 to 8 on the guage so I suspect the guage is inop. Next oil change, I can try to test the pressure.
When disconnected and engine off, both the old sensor and new read open circuit, measured from pin to metal housing. I can only measure resistance while the sensor is under pressure. The new sensor came from Amayama.
OK, diag time.
The oil guage is at zero with engine off. The oil guage goes to 8+ with engine on. With the sender disconnected, the guage is at zero with engine on. The sender is measuring 26-29 ohms at cold idle and the guage goes to 8+.
I guess the only thing left is to measure the...
Need the collective help of the forum. I replaced the sending unit with oem and the pressure guage is still pegged at beyond 8. No change from cold to hot, rpm, etc. Perhaps it is in the cluster. Capacitors?
I remember BMWs of the 90s, the oil pressure guage would swing up and down wildly with RPM. I thought it was pretty useless other than stating there is oil in the engine. For that, I still have the oil warning light.
Thanks. Looks like the sender is expensive, about $350. I will get one and be ready to replace at the next oil change. I saw that it might be easier to replace from the bottom instead of the top
With oil midpoint between the low and high mark on the dipstick, my oil gressure gauge on the cluster pegs at max after engine start. Is that what everyone experience?
So many weird things comparing yours and mine. The rpm at 15 and 25, the max emission for each test, etc. Seems to be a crapshoot other than grossly failing.
Since the test had to be in rollers, the tech asked me how to turn off the TCS. The tech did ask another mechanic how to clamp what I assumed to be something related to the a vacuum tube.
Since there are two exhaust paths, I think if you don't pass with one, might want to try the other...
Just to confirm, the 91-94 hollow "test pipes" or the two cats that I failed the CA smog with?
Once I hear back I will box them to determine weight. You can pm me your zip code so I can determine shipping. Thanks
Since I got my car through CA Smog test, I got a few misc parts to divest. Price is firm as it wouldnt be worth the time to package them up for anything lower.
#1 DC Sport header for the front bank. $100 + pp fee and shipping.
You might ask what happened to the rear bank header. It had a...
I wonder if cats would just get more and more expensive over time, not necessarily due to the precious metal getting more expensive but because there are fewer being made due to ev adoption.
Would still like to get another spare set.
Starting a tread on CA Smog limits. I am hoping owners would put up pics of their results so we can figure out reasons and fixes for smog fails.
Car year, model, miles, etc.
I bought the car out of Colorado and I had to put the exhaust back to oem. Got cats from ebay with unknown number of...
Old Guy, always appreciate you chiming in. I got OBDII to "Ready" for everything except for the cats. I couldn't get the cats to be in Ready after about 50 miles of mixed driving. I was hoping eventually it will be Ready but not yet. When I bought the car, it had cats but they were hollow...
BTW, I passed Brake and Lamp but failed SMOG. HC measured at 111 while max is 85 (@15 mph), HC measured at 74 while max is 50 (@25 mph). CO and NO were a tick below max and they passed.
Thinking of an attack plan: fuel injector cleaner, switch out the cats with another set of used units...
