Cunningham returns to Acura family in Speedvision GT

February 20, 2001 – Saukville WI

"The off-season was a short one, but the RealTime Racing team has been hard at work in preparation for their ninth year of Speedvision World Challenge competition. The biggest news from the RTR camp is not that Peter Cunningham will return to the GT Championship, but that he will return in a new car—an Acura NSX. The entire concept is not much more than one month old, so the team is scrambling to have the new #42 machine ready for its Round One debut.

Cunningham’s 2000 GT steed was strong enough to lead the most laps and secure the most pole positions, but wasn’t able to convert that speed into a championship. For 2001, the RealTime team leader has opted to go back to the same kind of machine that won him his last GT title in 1997, in attempt to secure his sixth SCCA Pro Racing Championship. 'The target of competitiveness in Speedvision GT is definitely an ever-moving one," stated Cunningham, "And since we last campaigned the flagship of the Acura Division, a host of new car & driver combinations have made their mark. But (car chief) Andrew Armistead knows what we’re up against, and with a lot of hard work from the whole team, I’m confident we can be in position to score good points throughout the year!'

The opposition for the RTR NSX will come from all sides, including from past and present teammates to Cunningham. Former RealTime driver Michael Galati, who finished second in the points last year in an Audi S4 Quattro, will head up the list. And new RTR Touring Car pilot Mike Fitzgerald, who won three Speedvision GT races for Porsche in 2000, will do double-duty this year and will also be a threat. And speaking of people with the potent Porsche 996, former Team PTG teammate Johannes van Overbeek will debut one of his own. Longtime friend and frequent teammate Boris Said is playing down his chances in a Mustang, but Cunningham is stocking up on aluminum doors just in case. The only other obvious adversary for the NSX comes from outside the circle previously mentioned, and that’s Bill Cooper’s Corvette. Peter and Bill enjoyed a number of heated battles during the course of the 2000 season, usually while fighting for the lead. 2001 should be no different, except that it will probably be even more crowded up there."
