Gathering at the
hotel Wednesday morning. |
| More cars at the
hotel. You can see Doug Hayashi's car in the background. He had clutch problems so he had
to turn around and go back to Riverside and have it worked on, which meant that
unfortunately he couldn't join the caravan as originally planned.
|
| Everyone standing
around checking out the cars.
|
| Lining up along
the road getting ready to leave Santa Clarita.
|
| Getting under way..
There were 30-35 NSXs in the caravan, which would make for a pretty big NSX event all by
itself. But we're going to be meeting up with over a hundred more in Monterey!!
|
| Blasting down the
highway headed for the back roads.
|
| Back roads found!
This was very exciting; everyone was looking forward to 8-10 hours of very spirited
driving through canyon roads and then up the gorgeous Pacific Coast Highway with nearly 3
dozen NSXs. For those of us who live on the other side of the country this was truly a
once-in-a-lifetime experience!
|
| The roads we took
for the first leg of the caravan are supposedly similar to the ones that the SoCal group
has been using for the Canyonball events..
|
| Blasting up one of
many short straight sections of road. It was hard to take pictures of any nice curvy
sections of road because I was driving...
|
| Stopping to
re-group. It's difficult to keep over 30 cars together for extended periods on public
roads.
|
| Line of stopped
cars
|
| John Stramotas'
(CA) nice red car with white powdercoated wheels. I was following him during this part of
the caravan.
|
| Mark Johnson's (CA)
new green/tan "Dali II" car that I'm driving. Thanks Mark!
|
| Kin Mitra's (GA)
modified black car. You can sort of see his RM hood at this angle.
|
| Row of mirrors and
side air intakes.
|
| Cool shadow effect
from the Dali Racing sticker on the rear glass.
|
| Back to driving
again..
|
| Quick pit stop at
McDonalds.
|
| We caused quite a
traffic jam in the McDonald's parking lot.
|
| Pulling out of
McDonald's was complicated because it was right by a major intersection. We got pretty
split up and so regrouped a little way down the road. Red seems to be a pretty popular
color...
|
| After today I
understand why the Canyonball events are so popular. These roads are EMPTY, well
maintained and enormously FUN!
|
| Some NSXs heading
down some cool road. Oh yeah, and a UFO in the upper middle part of the picture. OK, maybe
it's just some gunk on the windshield, but it could be a UFO...
|
| After the first leg
we hit some real rollercoaster roads. I thought the first set of roads were just about the
best you could find until we hit the second set. They were simply unbelievable. I was
honestly surprised that no passengers got motion sick.
|
Things finally flattened out
a little bit as we headed into the town of Templeton for lunch!
|
Parking for lunch
at the park in the center of the town of Templeton.
|
| Templeton is a
very quaint small town... the cars parked all around the perimeter of the park in the
town's center caused quite a stir.
|
| From the rear. We
were actually on all three sides of the park because not all the cars would fit on one
side.
|
| The park in the
center block of town was pretty nice. This is a scenic picture of some cars lined up
outside the park.
|
| Another picture...
zoomed in a bit vs. the one above.
|
| More
through-the-trees shots... By the way, the weather was perfect!
|
| I hope these aren't
too repetitive; I tried to take several angles so as many people as possible would be able
to see their cars!
|
| OK, the last one
of these shots.
|
Lunch was provided
by a catering service. It was very good! Here's everyone getting in line for some food.
|
| I'm pretty sure
Kendall Pond (CA) and Dave Goward (CA) paid someone off so they could eat first...
(Kendall is on the left, Dave on the right)
|
| The rest of the
folks eating lunch.
|
| More car pictures!
Notice the police car driving past in the background. You can also see Kin Mitra's (GA) RM
Racing hood on the far left.
|
| As soon as we got
back on the road this vintage Jaguar jumped into the middle of the caravan.... Pretty
cool, but he was going a little slower than our target speed.
|
| Once the Jag
pulled off it was clear flying.
|
| Out-the-window shot
of the cars behind me. I was near the front of the caravan here so you can really
get an idea of how many NSXs there were... they just keep going!
|
| The scenery along
route 1 is simply spectacular and never lets up.
|
| The weather stayed
nice all day long too. Warm, with a pleasant breeze. Not a cloud in the sky.
|
| We stopped at Cafe
Nepenthe to take in the scenery and get some drinks. This place has an absolutely
breathtaking 270 degree view!
|
| Attempt at an artsy
photo from the balcony at Cafe Nepenthe
|
| Lots of the coast
looks much like this.
|
| I strongly
recommend driving the PCH. The only down side is that lots of other people like to drive
on it too. Try to go during off-season. I think the fact that we were driving during the
middle of the week instead of on the weekend helped as well.
|
| Just another
gorgeous view as we neared Monterey...
|
| When we arrived at
the hotel many others had already made it. Here's a picture of the only two yellow cars
(so far..)
|
| More cars in the
hotel parking lot. The blue one belongs to Jerry Balcer (HI). He shipped it from Hawaii
just for NSXPO!
|
| Yet more cars in
the parking lot. We had our own roped-off sections to park in.
|
| Event
registration. Left to right: I think that may be Dick Hackman (OH) with his back to the
camera on the far left, Gary Milgrom (GA) standing, Harry Sommerfield (CA), Lauren Hackman
(OH) looking at box, Jacqueline Berthiaume (CA), Alex Vizcarra (CA) facing the camera.
Registration went very smoothly and quickly. Great job guys!
|
| Randy Marchetti
(AZ) from RM Racing set his car up in front of the hotel and drew quite a crowd. Nice HID
headlights Randy!
