Well this is Day 1,
the official start of NSXPO! Lots of driving today, starting with the Country Drive. Tthis
is our run group towards the beginning of the drive stopped briefly for bridge
construction headed south along the Pacific Coast Highway. |
We were lucky and
never had to stop more than a moment at any of the construction sites because we were out
there so early. They were doing seismic retrofits on the bridges. I believe the black car
is Bill Muirhead.
|
| At the first
turnout along the drive. I'm in the green on with the sticker on the front windshield. The
"two tone" car behind it belongs to Chris Sterne' (AZ).
|
The rest of the
cars at the turnout. The car with two stripes is Randy Marchetti (AZ).
|
| Parked in a circle
at another turnout.
|
Another angle of
the shot above.
|
| Light fog hanging
over the ocean.
|
| Note that the
third car back is at a 90 degree angle to the rest of us... Chris Sterne' has a minor
spin. Luckily nobody (including the car) was hurt. David Nguyen's excellent video shows the spinout from the
car-behind perspective. The car barely rolled into a minor ditch but luckily a highway
work truck just happened to be driving past and gave him a quick tow back onto the road.
|
| Keith Jarret (CA)
was our run group leader and said this is his favorite valley along our route. Very
scenic!
|
Moving right along
through the back roads... This picture of course was taken on a dyno machine and not on
the road because obviously this was not our typical speed along these roads since that
would be illegal. And certainly nobody ever hit 145 on a straightaway using nitrous...
|
| Bathroom break! A
few of us headed back to the hotel at this point in order to have time to wash our cars
before the 17 Mile Drive photo ops. Thanks to Keith Jarrett for organizing this part of
the event and sorry we had to cut out a little early.
|
Back at the
hotel... Quite a few new people arrived throughout the day and evening.
|
| The first stop
along the 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach.
|
| Cars at the first
stop.
|
| Red NSX at the
overlook.
|
| Group shot at
another stop. Shigeru "Speed" Takemura (Japan) was my passenger during the
17-mile drive. He's standing on the far left in this photo.
|
| Another stretch of
the 17 Mile Drive
|
| Over-the-shoulder
shot taken right after the one above.
|
| There was a
professional photographer taking pictures of people and their cars along the beach during
the 17 Mile Drive. Everyone received their photos as part of the event. Nice touch!
|
| A day at the
beach...
|
| This is called Bird
Rock.
|
Because it's
totally covered with birds! Each of the dark spots is a bird. I will leave it to you to
figure out what all the white stuff completely covering the rock is...
|
| More rugged coastal
scenery
|
| Bird on a rock.
Squirrels in the background.
|
| There were a dozen
of these squirrels hanging around. They would come up to everyone and beg for food. Other
than that they just lay around on the rocks and soak up the sun. This one's eating a piece
of hard candy somebody gave it. Pretty tough life.
|
When I say "beg for
food" I'm not exaggerating. Look at this thing!
|
| Bird On A Rock II
|
| I call this one "Bird On
A Rock III." Surprised?
|
| The only problem with all
these birds is that an hour after you wash the car.... Of course I'm the ONLY person this
happened to in our entire group. The birds ganged up on me and nailed the front, front
windshield, top, engine hatch glass, trunk, rear spoiler, drivers side door, and drivers
side rear quarter panel. What did I ever do to them to be singled out like that?!? Stupid
birds.
|
| Cars cars cars.
|
| Back on the 17 Mile
Drive route
|
| Still driving.
|
| More scenery!
|
| The Lone Cypress,
which is the official logo/symbol of Pebble Beach. Someone tried to burn it down a while
ago so you aren't allowed to go out there anymore. Why would someone try to burn this tree
down? People amaze me.
|
| Line of cars at the
spot where we stopped to see the Lone Cypress.
|
| Another angle of
the line of cars
|
| Lone Cypress again
|
| Oh yeah, you can
play golf here at Pebble Beach too!
|
| Bird On A Railing
(don't worry, it's not the first in a series like the Bird on a Rock shots...)
|
| Shot from the end
of the pier.
|
| The Lodge at Pebble
Beach. Hey, what's that in the side mirror?
|
More NSXs parked at a turnout on the 17 mile drive
|
| Driving along minding their own business, a group of NSXers were on the
17 Mile Drive when they passed some young ladies who looked like they might need some help
since they were mostly naked.
Being good Samaritans the NSXers went to investigate and see if they could provide
assistance.. |
| Well what would you know, they just happened to be professional models
over from Sweden. Since they were in between photo shoots they agreed to take a few
pictures with the cars.
|
| The guy running the show got upset and was worried the nice upstanding
NSX owners would try to sell the photos without having paid any modeling fees. He finally
agreed that more photos could be taken as long as the owners got in the pictures with the
girls so the resulting pictures couldn't be sold.
|
| Chris Willson conveniently edited the NSXers out of this photo with
PhotoShop!
|
| Down at the
marsh/lagoon/beach wildlife preserve area of Pebble Beach.
|
| Ferrari 512.. Hey
that guy's got twice as many cylinders as me! Doh!
|
| The minivan rented
by the 5 gentleman who came from Japan to attend NSXPO. It was quickly christened the
"Windstar Type-R" and sported a nice NSX flag!
|
| NSXCA president
David Hwang (MD) speaks briefly during dinner at the hotel. There were 28 tables of 10 and
very few empty seats. More people arrived later and some more will be coming on Saturday
for the track event only. Quite a turnout!
|
| Some folks deciding
what to do after dinner. One group went to San Jose, another went for a nighttime drive. I
went down to Cannery Row and checked out some local nightspots with Dan O'Haver (MI), Tom
Croly (GA), David Nguyen (MD), Brian Ledvora (FL) and Scott Edwards (FL).
|
There's a
side-by-side racing game down with the pinball machine and pool tables at the hotel.
Needless to say it's getting a lot of use! Here Scott Edwards (FL) in the foreground
battles David Nguyen (MD).
The hotel also has a Pizza Hut right next to this game room. I went over and stole a
slice of pizza from Doug Hayashi (CA), then it was time to do a website update and get
some sleep! |
