OEM spoiler: Is it functional, or aesthetic only?

I really like the look of the OEM spoiler, but I was wondering if it actually does anything. It would seem that it might smooth the airflow coming off of the tail, but not generate any downforce.
Just wondering...

it is very effective at high speeds.this I know for certain.now for opinion which is subjective.I think the oem wing is perfect as is and needs not to be replaced with a larger unit nor one with deeper angle

bad, how do you know for sure? do you have documentation? i have an aero degree, and i'm always interested in finding out these sorts of things...maybe i could check FAQ, duh.
