Hey Everyone,
I just purchased a used daily driver, and didnt really worry about rusting, I did notice alot of the bolts in the engine and exhaust tip were rusted REAL bad...over the weekend the exhaust blew a hole so went today to get it fixed...

once under the car, the whole exhaust piping was corroded with rust along with the muffler, bad enough to to hit it pretty hard and it would break apart, really fraile...

Anyone know where this came from? My mechanic says sometimes east coast cars get rusty like this, due to some type of salt things?? I dont really know what he's talking about...any help??? anything I should be worried about? thanks!

In the midwest we use salt to melt ice/snow off the roads. I'm sure that's what he's talking about. Everytime a decent snowstorm is coming, they send out trucks that load up the streets with salt. A rusty car/exhaust is more then common out here.... :\ I still can't believe you can buy a 50's car from out west with NO rust!

Wow. Are you serious? I guess if you haven't ever been to the east-coast in the winter you really wouldn't know what it's like to drive here in the winter. Its basically impossible to keep your car looking nice due to the large amounts of salt that are dumped on the roads to melt ice. I envy your ignorance though, its days like this, when it's 20 degrees outside and with the windchill it feels like -10, that really make me want to move somewhere warmer.

I have seen salt damaged cars along the Gulf Coast, namely Destin, FL. Perhaps the car sat at an oceanfront property for awhile?

You midwesterners had enough of this weather yet? I have forgotten the original color of my qday car by now. Salt on the coat, pants, gloves, shoes, here some salt there some salt everywhere some salt salt.

Thanks! at least I know where this came from, I never ever knew that this was a problem in the cold type of climates...maybe thats why I love So.CAL so much!! =)

Definitely the salt (and the fact that somebody didn't take care of the car after driving in those slushy salt-laden streets). Sniff, sniff. The roads in Chicago are so salty that it just pains me to realize that I won't be able to drive my baby for some time.

Regards.

Here in upstate NY the roads have so much salt on them they appear to be white in color. The NSx will stay in the garage until we have a few really hard rain storms to wash off the roads. BTW sometimes condensation will rot out an exhaust from the inside out.
