Seriously, after this whole Hussein ordeal is over (or not), C.P. will have a good chance to take up residence in the White House!

He said before that he wouldn't run for office because he's not ready.

IMO, what he really meant was: "I don't want to be president and have somebody put a bullet in my head" --for obvious reasons of course.

That is so sad.

What do you think?

Well, I think "Colin" Powell did a VERY GOOD job today of elucidating the reasons why Iraq can't be trusted and why we need to take action ASAP.

While I agree he is a talented speaker, I have little respect for him as a politician (he's been a politician, not a soldier for most of his career). If you really take a look at his track record and views over the course of his career, a lot of the glitter falls away. He was thrust into the national spotlight by the Gulf War, which he had very little to do with, other than acting as the primary interface between the White House and the media. Somewhat ironic, as he was vehemently opposed to the entire thing.

All in all, picking from current cabinet level choices, I'd rather have Ms. Rice running the country. She's a real hard-ass.

David, all politicians have an ugly side. What makes Powell different from Presidents A,B or C?

Face it, we aren't going to get another Abe Lincoln any time soon. Even he had some skeletons in the closet. But we'll have to choose the lesser of 2 evils in the meantime.

I agree with David. If we're picking from the Cabinet, Ms Rice is more my cup of tea than Powell.

However, so far, President Bush is doing a pretty good job.

Although, sometimes he gives a bit too much away to the left wing - but I understand and reluctantly agree with the probable strategy behind it.

PS: And while I'm at it... Boy that Nelson Mandela is turning out to be a real buttwad. He's got a lot of gall to say the things he's been saying. Shame on him.

Colin Powell would say 'i dont want to be president' now because otherwise it questions Bush's leadership.

You don't think he'd have trouble becoming president because he is African-American? (not wanting to start flame war...) It would be hard for him to break the mould of white presidents.

And second, Colin Powel's wife wont let him be the President, No seriously.

As a realist I totally agree, but it would be a shame if GWB popularity sank and CP did not run for the GOP spot.

I fear the day that socialist, B!~ch from hell (insert a former First lady here) appears on the Ballot. If such a day ever comes I hope C. Powell is there to preserve the paychecks of the "so called rich," I think thats defined as people making over $100K/yr, give me a break. Were the ones getting screwed the hardest in taxes.
Oh yeah, C. Powell is one helluva great speaker-and he's got my vote.

Only The Rich Pay Taxes

Top 50% of Wage Earners Pay 96.09% of Income Taxes

October 23, 2002

The IRS has released the year 2000 data for individual income tax returns. The numbers illustrate a truth that will startle you: that half of Americans with the highest incomes pays 96.09% of all income tax. This nukes the liberal lie that the rich don't pay taxes. The top 1%, who earn 20.81% of all income covered under the income tax, are paying 37.42% of the federal tax bite.

Think of it this way: less than four dollars out of every $100 paid in income taxes in the United States is paid by someone in the bottom 50% of wage earners. Are the top half millionaires? Noooo, more like "thousandaires." The top 50% were those individuals or couples filing jointly who earned $26,000 and up in 1999. (The top 1% earned $293,000-plus.) Americans who want to are continuing to improve their lives - and those who don't want to, aren't. Here are the wage earners in each category and the percentages they pay:

Top 5% - 56.47% of all income taxes; Top 10% - 67.33% of all income taxes; Top 25% - 84.01% of all income taxes. Top 50% - 96.09% of all income taxes. The bottom 50%? They pay a paltry 3.91% of all income taxes. The top 1% is paying more than ten times the federal income taxes than the bottom 50%! And who earns what? The top 1% earns 20.81% of all income. The top 5% earns 35.30% of the pie. The top 10% earns 46.01%; the top 25% earns 67.15%, and the top 50% earns 87.01% of all the income.

Thanks for the info Jimbo.

Scary, but I think its a safe assumption that the leaches of society are producing at a higher rate than the hosts and they get to vote too, that is they have a saying in how others money is spent. BTW, Viagra is on many states Medicaid (welfare) formulary, and states claim to be running out of $, again give me a (social program) break.

[sarcasm] Jimbo, you are missing the point! That money belongs to the government. The government depends on that money for various spending and entitlement programs. The government must have that money to spend. Reducing spending is not an option. If they give it to the rich, they obviously have to borrow it from somewhere else.[/sarcasm]

The disturbing thing is: somehow that has actually be come the prevailing opinion in the media!

Yep!

If it goes much further, one can almost imagine the gov't simply giving you what they feel your worth and keeping the rest.

If certain people think that the "rich" (now defined as anyone making over $55K..yes that's the truth) are not paying their fair share, then let's abolish the income tax and move to a pure consumption tax.

Since the rich buy more stuff, they'll pay more in the way of taxes. This would also encourage savings too.

If not that, then a simple flat tax.

I don't see a flat tax happening any time soon in this country.

According to the liberals, a flat tax is not fair.

Wait...how is making everyone pay the same percentage of taxes not fair?

Oh...I recently listened to a speech uttered by Tom Daschle where he proclaimed and defined the rich as the top 25% of all income earners.

That would be those of us earning more than $50,000 annually. And therefore the rich paid almost 83% of all federal income taxes.

I guess we all know a lot of "rich" people, huh?

Could you post a link for these stats on the IRS website.... I couldn't find any info in this nature. I would like to read more.
