I'm trying to get as many NSX's together to do some sort of meet/cruise on Oahu. Anyone on Oahu interested (of course anyone that's off island with an NSX is more than welcome to join, you just have to ship you car in for the day)

?? We can even do a combo thing with the s2000 guys. Let me know. If you're interested, post or e-mail me at [email protected] .

Aloha!!!

I'm interested; however, don't make it too soon as my car has been stuck in Honolulu Matson since Wednesday when it arrived and it is not ready for pick up yet

I figure either Monday or Tuesday

But then after that I have to take car of all the safety inspection and registration things. By the way Duece, you didn't have to pay sales tax when you registered the NSX did you? I mean, the registration should only cost a little over $100 right? Not $1000K I hope.

Most states charge you sales tax if you buy a car out of state, and they will usually collect this at the time you have the title transferred. Check the website for the Hawaii Department of Revenue to verify.

I know I'll definately find out the answer in a few days. We do have 30 days to get all the registration things done though. On a side note, I don't know anyone that had to pay, or at least told me that they had to pay sales tax yet. The funny thing is Hawaii doesn't really have a sales tax as wel have a straight accross the board General Excise tax on eveything. I believe we just passed legislation to pay taxes on out of state "NEW" car purshases though, but I don't think it is for used cars. Before, people would buy a car in Oregon and ship it back to Hawaii because they didn't have to pay tax. Not anymore though. I'm just hoping it is not for used cars as well

Hopefully I don't have to pay any tax so I can use the money to buy things for the NSX.

In Hawaii, it's called the Department of Taxation, not the Department of Revenue. In looking through their publication about the state's use tax, it seems pretty clear that you will have to pay 4 percent use tax on a car (new or used) that you bought from someone* on the mainland. It also appears from looking at the tax form that if you're trading another car in, you only have to pay use tax on the difference in value; however, it is not clear whether or not the trade-in must be to the same dealer/person where you bought the car.

Most states will help you through any forms and payment of such taxes at the DMV office when you go to transfer the title and register the car.

Also note that most states will not apply sales tax for the sale of a car to an out-of-state buyer. Thus, you might be paying 4 percent Hawaii use tax, but you probably won't have to pay sales tax to the state where the seller is located. (If you DO have to pay sales tax to another state, Hawaii will give you a credit towards the payment of the use tax.)

*Edit - As noted below, it is quite clear from this publication that you have to pay the use tax ONLY if you buy a car (new or used) from a dealer or person on the mainland who is in the business of selling cars, and NOT if you buy a used car from an individual who is not otherwise in the business of selling cars.

Just to let you guys know, Hawaii has the MOST NSX owners under 21 of any state. I guarantee it. MANY are none too bright. I was one of the first "Young" peeps to get an NSX on Oahu 4 years ago, and since then I have seen MANY young peeps going and buying one. That in itself wouldn't be too bad, BUT they drive around like they are God's Gift. I wouldn't want those heads on a cruise, as they would make it, lets just say, stressful. That is why when I saw many of them on the road I made them feel like the stuff on the bottom of my shoe after I step in crap. If you want your cruise to be nice, keep those bozos out of it. Trust me. Shawn

BTW, Try ask Colin Sato about my group of friends from a few years ago "Midnight". Ask him if he knows who Roy, Saiki, & Chim are. You should get an interesting response. =)

Jerry, I don't know how hard it's going to be to get everyone together but it's worth a try, I haven't seen a group of NSX's cruising yet, only solos. Even if we only get a handful it should be fun. I've already posted on the s2ki board about the cruise so we'll see....

Chris, that's awesome!!! Good to hear that it's finally here. PM me and I'll talk to you about the taxes.

Shawn, Thanks for the heads up. I actually remember seeing your car when it was down here....."Bad Ass!!!" On another note, i've heard a lot of crazy stories about "Midnight", maybe someday we can "talk story" a bit. Jus' for fun, when I see Colin I'll bring up the names.

Hey Ken, it's amazing how much information you dig up on the internet
smile.gif
Anyway, on that same link at question #18, it states that I shouldn't have to pay the "USE" tax if I bought a used car from an individual out of state that is not in the business of selling cars. I think they called this a "Casual" sale and no use tax is applied. If you have the time, check it out and let me know your thoughts on it. I'm not much of a tax person so I might misunderstand the different terms and jargon at times.

Aha! I didn't get that far reading the publication. You're absolutely right. This question and answer makes it very clear. You do not pay use tax when buying a car from a private individual in another state.

All right all, here's the info if you're interested in going. I already have a few NSX's & s2000's going, see ya there!!! ........

Owners of NSX's & S2000's lets get together here on Oahu. We don't need alot of cars, but, the more the better. I'll contact Colin on this end. Anyone having a new exotic sports car, NSX, has got to be anxious to cruise with others that have the same interest. Been there, done that!
smile.gif
Colin would be the MAN to finalize the March event. Get together the names and phone numbers of those that want to participate and get them to Colin. I'll bring this idea to his attention. Let's get some feedback from him. Ciao! - Jerry

PS - Maui, someday we will make an event for the island. Had any luck finding other NSX's? - JB [email protected]

March is the New Car show for Honolulu at the Convention Center. We should see an Imola Orange colored NSX 2003 at the show. I believe we haven't seen a NSX there for 2 or 3 years. My Blue '97 was in the show when the dealership did not have one available. That was an honor! - J

Cool, we can finally see the 02/03 update in person. I really want to do the 02+ rear valance update but I'd like to see it in person before laying down the cash. The last time I saw an NSX at a local car show (Other than the import car shows) was when Alan Pfluegar still owned the black 98 that was sold a couple years ago. I have a picture of it and I think it was from 2001.

I've already posted on the s2ki board and Rick has been grouping everyone together along with getting the insurance. I haven't heard anything from Colin yet??

BTW the Hot Rod guys do a cruise on different islands every year, it's usually a 3 day event w/dinners & potlucks hosted by the people that live on the island that's being visited. I wouldn't mind going to Maui.....

Sorry, I just have to complain to the fellow Hawaii NSX owners about how long Matson is taking. The car was dropped of at Matson (Oakland) on February 7. It didn't get on a ship until Feb. 14. It arrived in Honolulu on Feb. 19. Now they tell me they are still working on proccessing the cars that came in on Feb 16, so mine probably wont be ready until maybe Mon. 3/3. Maybe even later. Just shipping alone is taking almost 4 weeks. This has been a really long buying proccess. I started negotiating with my friend for the NSX Oct. 31/Nov. 1. The only thing that is keeping me smiling is knowing that this 4 months proccess will come to a really good end with an NSX in my garage

I guess I got lucky, I got mine off the boat the same week it came in. Keep the faith man, soon you'll be riding behind the wheel of an awesome piece of machinery. Let's just hope you can get it off the boat by March 30th!!!!

Okay, I picked the NSX up today (Monday 03/03/03). I'm very happy that it appears Matson put no additional damage to the car while shipping. The NSX only had a light layer of dust on it which is not bad considering it has been sitting on the docks or no a ship since 02/07. It has beeen nearly 4 weeks in transit.

Now I officially feel like or dork since I can't stop smiling while driving
smile.gif

Glad to hear the car made it safely!! I'm sure the car will give you as many silly grins as it gave me each time you drive it.

Hi Ben,

Yes, the NSX will most definately bring me some joy. Even Noreen said it was all worth the hype
smile.gif
Since I went to get it insured, I actually put on about 30 miles on it already. I filled up 92 gas as that is the highest we have. Don't you guys only have 91? By the way, later you have to let me know about those extra BOSE amps you gave me. I know one is marked bad, but is the other good? I'll let you drive it again the next time you are back in Hawaii
