What oil filter is this?

I performed my first oil change over the weekend on my new to me '91. I picked up what I believe to be the correct OEM filter from an Acura dealer, part #15400-PL2-004. When I got under the car and pulled off the old one, it was several inches shorter than the new one I bought? Looking through the most recent service records of my previous owner it looks like the shop that performed the work put on a 15400-PL2-315. What filter is this and why would they have done this? They specialize in Honda's and service a handful of NSXs. Very odd.

I'm not 100% sure about 15400-PL2-315, but it's probably an Acura Legend oil filter. According to the FAQ, "15400-PL2-004 is the part number for the NSX filter."

The FAQ has an explaination of why a Legend oil filter was used. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for a shop to use a Legend filter. :(

I agree. You'll note that the FAQ quotes a very knowledgeable NSX expert ;) saying, "The oil filters for the 1990 Legend and the NSX were the same. Then, Acura changed the Legend oil filter to a smaller size."

Your engine is probably fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm certain this was a Legend oil filter. It was only on there for 3k miles and it sounds like it probably isn't too big of a deal. I just had some panic at 11:00pm last night when I pulled it off!

I had the same filter on my car, according to the awesome FAQ and talking with the dealer turns out it was an Legend or even possibly an Accord filter.

I didn't take the legend filter off until the next oil chng I didn't noitice and change in oil level or quality when I dumped the oil.

I made sure the right filter is in there now... the longer one!
