Will a K&N fit INSIDE the fender well?

Does anybody know if a K&N filter will fit inside the wheel well in the intake on the drivers side? I was considering extending my intake pipe from the turbo and relocating the filter in there so its sucking 100% outside air. This would be a temp. performance fix for summer heat till I get the new deal from up north. Maybe even fill in the gap around the intake pipe and the hole in the engine well wall so it doesn't suck back in any hot air from the turbine side pipes anymore. I am posting a pic of what it basically looks like now so if you havent seen it you can get an idea. I cinched down the wastegate all the way shut and raised the fuel pressure, she does pretty good until those damm turbine side pipes start hittin 1800 deg. and turn the engine bay into an oven!

I have one in each fender well. Mine are not the round type, they are more of a oval. When is the real turbo kit coming????

That one in the picture will not fit. You'll need longer thinner tube type that KN sells.
 
Thanks you guys, I think it seems like a worth-it gig for relatively inexpensive parts. The new one is entirely up to Gerry, he is a BIZZ-Y Guy! But no worries, I'm single and its summer. I was worried when I turned 38 they might stopped jumpin' in the boat, but they haven't!
 
OK Kool, Ramon at Niguel Motors (949) 348-2476 is gonna do a temp. conversion for me on monday morning. For those of you not in the know, Ramon is an EXCELLENT Acura-Trained NSX tech in Orange County. I highly reccomend him for ANY stock work and any mild to medium type mods. He knows the car like the back of his hand. I will post the change next week and let y'all know if the 100% outside air theory makes a difference!!!
 
Hey well Ramon crammed it in there with some flex hose as an extension from the big chrome intake pipe seen in the pic above. Unfortunately, the physics of it don't seem to work out in the flow department. It adds up to about 4 feet of tubing from the K&N in the side well to the intake of the compressor and I can only get about 2PSI, the poor baby is starving for air when the serious suction begins. On a positive note, I made an interesting observation. First I felt the in & out pipes from the compressor. The in side was cool! The out to the throttle body was still hot, thaqt was expected. Then, when I removed the flex hose from the intake pipe so it was sucking filterless hot engine compartment air (a test to see if I got regular boost) then the intake pipe got hot again. So, the setup is sucking nice cool outside air except the pipe diameter is too thin to support a high flow situation. I wonder what diameter you would need to easily flow 5 or 6 PSI worth of air?
 
I would imagine 3" piping would be good. What kind of flex piping are you using? Metal? If you weren't going to different turbo setup, I would have suggested putting air/water cooler between the turbo and throttlebody.
 
Your main issue there is with the flexpipe. The uneven inside walls of the flexpipe cause so much disturbance that the air almost comes to a standstill.

You would seriously be better off going to pep-boys and getting multiple bends of 3" smooth exhaust pipe, and hooking them together to get to the air filter in the fender...

Hmmmmm Good suggestions guys & thanks! I am going to try an outlandish idea I had this evening. I went to the world famous Homer Depot and bought a piece of 4" dryer flex tinfoilish pipe. I am going to try putting the K&N right on the compressor and then put the 4" over it and out to the grommet in the engine bay. I will tell you guys tomorrow why it didn't work!
 
OK! We fixed it! We discovered that the silver flex we had inside the black hose was pushed up against the inside of the K&N and was practically plugged! So we took out the silver flex and just did the black cloth on wire spiral now it works nice! I can't wait to try it at night with crispy ocean air like 55 degrees suckin right from the side . . .
 
Just a quick question........how is all the plastic trim and such holding up from that dramatic increase in heat. I mean there is plastic hatch trim right up against the exhaust, and there is also plastic trim and clips all over the place in the engine compartment. Is that stuff OK or has it deformed and discolored? It is heat resistant because it's in the engine bay, but I wouldn't think it was supposed to handle temps up over 1500 degrees?? Also what about the fuel delivery system, I mean damn!! all that heat bottled up inside a glass greenhouse, with fuel injectors right under it. Isn't that a bit dangerous

What you said all makes sense, however it apparently (knock on wood-my head!) is safe enough as I've been running it like that for about 18 months now. It's definitely a makeshift setup with a lot to be desired, but as far as safe, the honda materials *seem* to be OK with the whole idea. The biggest problem I can see is there are so many exhaust leaks that the motor is covered in black soot and tar\oil\sludge from a leaky turbo. Other than that it seems pretty OK, just kinda weathered. Of course the real proof will be in the pudding when El Maestro Gerry Johnson gets out the microscope on it! But in simplest terms, if it was THAT horrible it wouldn't still be goin after 18 months!
 
true that......you definitely have a point, but just please tell me you carry a good fire extinguisher......not kidding
