The "OEM" filters that the Acura dealers are using now (at least the dealer I've used) are actually made by FRAM and are reportedly inferior to the old Japanese filters. The new ones have "HONDA" and some Japanese writing on them......but the lower rim has "fram" printed on it.

Fram does make Honda filters but to Honda's precise specifications. These filters are still superior to the orange color Frams you see at your local auto parts stores. As long as it's sold by Honda and has a Honda part number, I really wouldn't worry that much about it.

Just make sure they are not trying to sell you the Legend oil filter, check the part number. I've read here about dealers telling people they are ok to use, they are NOT:

from the FAQ:

"The oil filters for the 1990 Legend and the NSX were the same. Then, Acura changed the Legend oil filter to a smaller size. As I recall this was around June of 1995. The price of the NSX oil filter also increased in price, while the "new" Legend filter decreased in price. 15400-PL2-004 is the part number for the NSX filter."

How could you possibly know that one or the other of these filters is "superior" ?

This "opinion" is from several sources. Other message boards, an Acura mechanic and the following site. Remember, this is just my opinion with no real scientific evidence. But as far as Acura not possibly putting a lesser quality (I didn't say "poor quality") filter on a car...............business is business and it wouldn't surprise me at all. If they deem it adequate and they can increase the bottom line--------why not? http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

I'll say.

Just to sum up what you're saying...

1. You claim that this opinion comes from other message boards, an Acura mechanic, and a website. The website that you cite tests oil filters that are not made for the NSX, and does no testing of NSX oil filters. And the other message boards have nothing to do with the NSX, since no such charges have been made on this board or on other NSX-based boards. And we have never heard this about the NSX oil filters from any of the Acura mechanics who are most familiar with the NSX. Therefore, none of the sources you use have any knowledge of, or about, the NSX, or the oil filters for the NSX. So for all we know, the ones that are sold for the NSX in the States, in Canada, and in Japan may very well all be identical.

2. You claim that Acura has changed the sourcing of their filters, and as "proof", you cite an article that points out differences between filters sold in the U.S., Canada, and Japan - but the article makes no mention to any changes in the sourcing of these filters over time. So therefore, I would conclude that the OEM filters for the NSX are probably coming from the same source that they always have.

You can believe whatever you like. I'll keep buying OEM oil filters without any reservations whatsoever.

I just bought one from the local dealer today -- didnt notice anything different. Same labeling. Still made in japan. The only thing thats changed in the last 4 months is the price went up another $4 (to a whopping $19). Time to order another case from dali...

That could be due to the fall of the dollar vs the yen...

I'm going to check my spare oil filter when I get home from work. As far as I know it's blue, slender, and had no FRAM writing on it when I looked at it, although it was a quick glance-over at the time.

Could these be counterfeit Honda oil filters in any way? I've heard FRAM oil filters don't give correct oil pressures on many cars.
