ALB Exercising...

Wet morning, so I put to practice what I'd read in the FAQ about 'exercising' the ALB module - I had experienced the occaisional squeal from the ABS pump on startup.

When standing on the brakes I'd get a very slight snatch left or right then feel the pedal thumping, feeling like it was working OK.

I tried this about 8 times over about a mile and upon the 4th go I started to get a loud rattling/tapping sound from the pump. This would last about 5 seconds.

I reread the FAQ & did not find any mention of the rattling sound, so is this normal and do I have to carry on 'exercising' them until this stops, or have I an expensive problem?!

Simon.

The ABS pump does make an alarming noise when it runs, as you know. It will run if the ABS is activated to build up the pressure in the system again. The noise of the pump does change slightly if the pressure in the system is low compared to when the pressure is higher.

Hard to say if anything is wrong based on noise, but just doing what you did shouldn't break anything.

Check the fluid levels. It can get sprayed out when the ABS activates.

So, the noise it makes is normal and the slight 'snatch' I get with one or other front wheels locking momentarily is normal too?
It sounds like your car is operating normally.

I'm not sure what you mean when you use the word "snatch". We don't use that word for car characteristics on this side of the pond. (It has other meanings here, not all of them suitable for a family audience. ;) )

:D

I know what you mean. :D

...the "slight snatch" described was not referring to something well trimmed (trying to be cryptic?), but to the momentary locking of one or other of the front tyres upon braking!

In the FAQ it mentions having one or more of the 'solenoids' stuck and 'exercising' the brakes eventually cleared the problem....may seem like a stupid question, but how do you know if they are stuck? Will it mean one of the tyres will lock for too long?
