is it possible to insure a driver for multiple vehicles as opposed to insuring each vehicle all the time. if you have three sports cars , using each occassionally, full coverage all the time on each is a huge expense. as it is physically impossible to drive more than one at a time, it would seem possible to insure any car driven by a single person. has anyone done this?

I have 21st and they set my nsx as a weekend car and my prelude as a daily. Therefore the insurance on my nsx is very low. Only cost me less than $1000 per year full coverage. If I don't rate it as a weekend car then it would cost me $1800 per year. So my point is you can get multiple cars discount.

Woody, In the winter I take the collision portion of my policy off my car, since I do not drive the car in the winter. I also have it listed as a "pleasure only" vehicle, that saves me $$$s as well.
Multi-car policies save you $$s, if there is a way to put a house are other insurances with the carrier, it may help to lower cost as well.

i understand the multi car discount, but one driver cannot spend more time driving three cars than he can one. point being ; total driving time ( at risk, on road time) is independent of number of vehicles. seems like i should be able to insure myself with a policy that covers any car i drive.

Woody;

Now where can the bloody insurance agents make money off that thinking? :)

I've been down this road and haven't found any great answers. I currently own 16 cars and the best I could do is get classic type car insurance thru Grundy Worldwide.

There are some restrictions, but the rates are superb.

PM me if you have any specific Q's.

Woody, I get a pretty good deal through Allstate. I have 4 cars in the household. Pay around $800/year for year-round full coverage on the C5. PM me if you want me to hook you up with my Allstate guy...he's helped a lot of my friends who were being ripped off at Statefarm :p

That's what multiple car discounts are for. They take into account the fact that you can't drive all your cars at the same time.

Yeah, just wait until you have a claim. I am very happy with my service and my rates at State Farm. I switched over after I had a claim under my Allstate policy and they screwed me over by lowballing the value of my totalled car and fighting it tooth and nail. If you want to be ripped off, stick with Allstate and just wait until you have a claim; then you'll find out why Allstate ranks lower than State Farm on every survey Consumer Reports has done on customer satisfaction with auto insurance companies, year after year.

my current multi car discounted policy does not specify that I am the sole driver of all vehicles, in fact it states that any driver falls under the coverage, thus allowing for > 1 drivers worth of liablity. if all 3 cars can be driven simultaneously, the total exposure with the multi car discount is greater than it would be with a single car. doesn't make sense. I think it is just a "bulk" purchase discount.

Ken, FWIW, Allstate paid me more than what I paid for a 98' Benz S-class that got totalled a few months after purchase. Can't really complain :D

I've been very happy with State Farm, but Geico sure is cheap. If anyone has any experience with them as far as filing a claim I'd love to hear about it. State Farm was great when I filed a claim and I'd hate to have a problem later just to save a few bucks now.

It costs less to insure two cars rather than one for some reason.

Buy insurance on the secondary market for the car or cars you don't drive and use conventional carriers for your primary ride. Better then multi-car discounts IMO

As usual, the best recommendation is to do your research and shop around.

Consumer Reports had a buying guide to auto insurance in their October 2002 issue, and it had a lot of advice, but not brand name recommendations. They had an article with brand name evaluations in their September 1999 issue. It showed prices in five major markets, and the least expensive in one market was not necessarily the lowest in another. They evaluated 36 insurers based on claims satisfaction. The highest, ranked 1 and 2, were USAA and Amica. Here are the rankings of the ones mentioned in this topic:

State Farm (mutual company) 18
State Farm (casualty company) 21
Geico 26
California State Automobile Association 27
Allstate 32

You should be able to find either of these issues in your local public library.

I had GEICO as my insurer for the last 15 years. The rates were very good, and I never had a reason to change. A few years ago I rear-ended a lady in my 740IL, which caused major damage to my car and almost none to hers (I submarined under her steel bumper and crushed my entire front end). GEICO had a rep at the body shop that afternoon and authorized all the work immediately, then followed up with me regarding the status of the other driver's claim. The only negative is that they only paid for the rental car for 30 days, which was nowhere near long enough to get a BMW fixed over the holidays. BTW, they also guarantee the repairs for life if done through one of their approved shops.

Alas, because Texas can't seem to figure out that homes have had mold in them since the beginning of time, I was forced to consolidate all of our insurance policies just to get our lakehouse insured at all - what a racket! So now it's Allstate, where I've had no complaints (and no claims, Ken;) ). The rates are actually lower than GEICO, so hopefully there will be no problems in the event I actually need them someday.
