window adjustment

Hello all,

I have been living with the harsh wind noise from my drivers side for far too long and I decided to get the window adjusted. I mentioned the above to the service adviser at my local acura dealer and they did NOT think that the window could be adjusted on the NSX. I mentioned nsxprime faq etc.. and they called me back and gave me a price of $150.

Is that a fair price for dealer work? Secondly, should I trust this dealer to handle a job that they werent sure of (or try an autoglass shop)? Finally, is it easy for a novice (limited tools and time) to adjust the window?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

First thing is that there are certainly adjustable. I would say that $150 would = 2 hours at $75. Actually I think it could take 2 hours to really get it right, especially if the tech is not experienced at it. This is not something on an NSX that most techs would do regularly.

I think the dealer is covering his bases for sure.

It takes: "Patience, Grasshopper"

Tell them to look at pages 20-13 through 20-17 of the '91 NSX service manual, and see if they still give you that line. ;)

For other years - go to the table of contents for the "Body" section, and look for "Doors - Glass Adjustment".

hahaha That's a good one. I'd like to see their response. :D

Quite frankly what scares me the most is that they made that comment in the first place. Does anyone know any car that has windows that go up & down and aren't adjustable:confused:   Maybe on a much older car, but any modern day car has to have some way to "fit" the glass just right.

Hey John!!

My experience has been with windows on a "frameless" door there typically is, but for doors with window frames, they use the side track as the guide. I do not even think my 1998 Accord has adjustments. But now you will make me check the service manual this evening:).

Obviously, the dealer will need to gain some experience on this one. Also it is possible the tech could be experienced and trained, but the service advisor was not aware of the NSX adjustment.

I still think the 2 hour quote is really not way out in left field. If you have had an NSX door apart, including window glass and the door sash, it is certainly a puzzle. One half turn of a bolt can throw the whole window glass out of whack. Finding the "sweet spot" is the challange.

Usually you can go up or down slightly on each end of the bottom rail which tweaks the angle of the window when it travels up the "guide". I think the 98 accord is like that, my 1990 CRX was. I had to replace my window once, I had it adjusted wrong and it would only go up half way and then it would bind and stop:(:(:(

Who knows.....but yeah frameless windows usually have a lot of adjustment.

I recently tried adjusting mine according to the pages in the service guide and let me tell you it was a tedious task that required all of my patience. First, just understanding how the bolts relate to the adjustments was painful (I'm a rookie) and finding the "sweet spot" is not that easy either unless you are experienced with this and changing one bolt makes the others need tweeking too. I must have rolled my window up and down 30-40 times and opened and closed my door to check the seal a few dozen. It took me over 3 hours and I settled for less than perfect.

While you're in there make sure it is greased up really good and take the opportunity to change your window fix it thingies if you need them. The good thing is that it is definitely adjustable and it should fix your wind noise like it did mine. After the job make sure you open and close the door and it does not pinch the seal but is tucked in well and with proper clearance from the plastic grommet on the top of the seal. Again, refer to the service pages to be educated so you can check the tech's work if you decide to go that route.

My 2 cents... lock him into $150 for a perfect adjustment but don't let an inexperienced tech leave you unsatisfied... he can make it worse then say it needs to be replaced because he does not want to do it anymore. I would suggest letting someone who is experienced do it... but don't ask me I charge $500;)

Good luck
