Proper offset?

Ok, I got 2 quotes for 17/18 Volk GT-7's, and I got 2 different answers for proper offset. One said 42 front, 37 rear, while another said 44 for both front and rear.

Anybody know which is the proper offset? Does the wheel width matter?

Thanks.

Stock offset is 55mm front and 60 rear. If the new wheels are close to the OEM widths then 42 would be the right one.

Does the wheel width matter?
Offset is independent of width - a 5" wide wheel can have the same offset as a 13" wide wheel. But they will definitely not have the same backspace.

Offset Is the horizontal distance from the mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel (that is, the vertical center line between the inside and the outside rims).

Backspace is the horizontal distance from the mounting surface to the inside edge of the rim. It is relevant because it tells you if the new rim is going to rub on your suspension.

You can read all about about these concepts here.

If you are using much wider wheels, it follows that offset (because it affects backspace) does matter. In other words, size does matter!:D

ok so whats the maximum offset that you can go on an nsx. Meaning how far out can you go without rubbing. Assuming we are going with 17 / 18 combo.

Depends on tire size, and what you are referring to as "rubbing." There must be a balance between catching the lip of the fender and rubbing inside while the wheels are turned, which all has to be factored with tire size, wheel width and well as offset. As far as rubbing on the inside, this thread has some good information on that portion, where member NSXT shows us how to calculate if a tire will rub using the Pythagorean theorem. At the bottom of the thread I posted a link to a spreadsheet that does the calcs for you.

A few questions for Lopaka69: Of the two quotes you got, which of them had first hand knowledge with an NSX? I'd be inclined to order from someone who has an NSX and also sells wheels. I know of at least three here on the forum. Did you ask any of them?

KGP, I don't know the extent of their knowledge. Please let me know which members on the forum sell wheels.

Thanks.

There have been many different combos of offsets used for each wheel above. For the 17x7, since it is not wide at all, anything from +55 to +30 will fit under the fender. For the rear, 50 to 35 will fit too. However, this does not mean that particular wheel will clear the caliper. If you can assume these wheels will clear, I personally would get the less positive offsets to maximize the stance of the car. I use TE37 17x7.5 and 18x9.5 et 40mm F+R without issues and even with a little room to spare.

Again, without stating the widths of the wheels, there is no way to answer this. However, with the recent threads, Poohbear is able to fit a 18x8 et37mm wheel with a 3mm spacer(essentially making it a 34mm offset) without problem. This is probably the most aggressive front set up I have seen. theWB has 19x11 with something like +44 offset for the rears, also the most agressive I have seen.

no rubbing? ok so this is what ive concluded so far.

17X8 front with 215 40 17 tires
18x10.5 rear with 265 35 18 tires
offset: front 40 rear 35
1.5" drop

all above is with regular fenders

but if i want to go with wide 30mm fenders i would have to go with what at the front and rear?

coz i want the biggest lip possible. heehhe:D

Looks like that will work fine.

I don't follow you here. Do you mean if you went to a 30mm offset in front?
