Photos of the stereo upgrade.

As I mentioned earlier, phase 1 of my stereo upgrade will be speaker and amp replacement. Phase 2 will be a new head unit and the SoS center console. One thing I want to preserve is the ability to go back to original stock if necessary. If I ever sell the car in the future, the new owner will have the option of taking it with or without the new stereo. I plan to have the Bose amps rebuilt.

The installation is being done by Ken at Sound Advice in Boca Raton. Ken is an expert installer with 15 years experience. He can plastic weld and do custom carbon fiber work as well. It doesn't hurt that he is a sports car fan too and treats every vehicle better than if he owned it himself.

The Mobile Electronics Manager's name is Craig Lesser. He can be reached at 561-994-4434

I'm going to try to document the installation as much as possible.
Here are the first set of photos showing the JL Audio 650-CXi speaker and x-over mounted in the left door and the initial work on the subwoofer housing that will be the new home of a JL Audio 8W3v2D4 sub.

More pics tomorrow as work progesses

I must commend you on your choice of speakers. If I do replace the NSX speakers, the JL's seem like an excellent and affordable option.

I cant wait to see the rest of the pics. Good luck with the install, Hugh.

Ravi Mohan

There is already so little legroom in the passenger seat.. why take up more for a sub.. I dont get it. I have seen some installed behind the seat.. makes more sense to me.

Boca Raton is in florida.

When you remove the Bose sub assembly there is a cavernous opening back there. Here are photos of the sub box as it is nearing completion. It will fit perfectly where the Bose unit was and not take up even an extra millimter of footroom. The sub box is sealed and is the perfect volume to accomodate the 8" JL subwoofer according to JL's specs. There's probably room for a 10" but the 8" is more than enough for the volume of the passenger compartment.

I'll probably have a mold made of the enclosure so it can re-produced and sold as custom sub box for the NSX. Let me know if you guys would be interested in this.

The front frame is made of 3/4" MDF and the fiberglass shell is about 1/4" thick. The thing is solid. It will be filled with dampening material before the sub goes in. Stay tuned for more pics.

Looks like you are well on your way to a very nice system!
Please keep the pictures coming.
I might be interested in the sub enclosure if the price is right.
Do you have any idea what he would charge for the enclosure without the speaker.

Take care,

Nate in DC

BTW nice choice in bikes!

Is there a reason why you went with the JL coaxials?

I'd like to know the mounting depth and internal air volume if you have that info. Thanks.

I went with the coaxials because I didn't want to cut any holes in the factory parts. One of the requirements of the system was that the car could be returned to original condition if I ever sold it.
It has been my experience that once you start making irreversable mods, especially on an exotic car you lose re-sale value.

All the specs you're looking for can be found at http://www.jlaudio.com/

Here the sub installed. Not one millimeter of legroom has been sacrificed. Note that the solid metal plate is not used because it might produce weird resonances.

I'd like to get an idea how many people might be interested in having a custom box built for them. The cost should be about $450.00 without the speaker. Keep in mind these are hand built and take about 2 days to make. I strongly recommend you use the JL 8W3v2 series of speaker, either the dual 4 ohm or dual 2 ohm model depending on your amp's requirements. Anything larger is overkill and would require an enclosure that would most likely intrude on leg room.

We should have filled it with water for the most precise measurement but Ken's measurements put it between 0.3 and 0.4 cubic feet.

I've been driving around for an hour and it sounds great even with the factory head unit. Nice tight bass just the way I like it not boomy at all. You can feel Neil Peart's kick pedal hitting that bass drum. :)

I'm going to re-load the CD player with Dark Side of The Moon and Aja for the next drive. I can't wait to put in the new head unit.

Here is the JL 300/4 amp beautifully mounted in the trunk. It is configured as 2X75 Watts for the door speakers at 4 ohms and 1X150 watts for the sub at 8 ohms.

I might also be interested in the sub box...thks Brent:D

Nice looking set-up there, im sure it sounds great too. I have a question though. For those with the later models that come with power steering, how would your installer compensate for that in the boxes? Make the box enclosure smaller? or just move the entire steering control? Im asking becasue if you order a custom box, and have a later model, it doesnt seem like one size would fit all.

What model year did they start putting that power steering box back there? I'll check with Ken to see if he has done an NSX with power steering.

Maybe the automatic people need a better stereo to make up for the fun they are missing!!!!! ha ha :D
