i saw a 1999 nsx today and the guy told me that it was supercharged and had 490hp. it also was lowerd and had stiffer suspension. lets just say that is all correct (not that i dont believe the guy) but what would be a potential top speed for a car like that?? just wondering cause some of the guys at work saw it also and it sparked some conversation about it. we work at a motorcycle shop and like to go fast 200+mph for some of the guys. well thanks for any info guys and keep up the good work on those beautiful cars

490 hp? I think he meant 390 maybe.. If he meant 490,give me his number because I want one too.....:D

He might have been calculating crank HP from a wheel dyno. Iv'e not heard of a SC'd NSX with 490rwhp, at least not yet. Turbo NSX's, yes, there are some out there, and with even more than 490rwhp.

A stock NSX's top speed is limited by drag. Not sure what the gearing/redline limits top speed to, but not much more than top speed of a stock X, which is ~168.

Horsepower can overcome drag but as speeds increase the amount of horsepower needed to go faster increases exponentially. 200MPH is attainable but you're gonna need a lot of ponies to get there.

The real factor that limits the car's top speed is the courage and confidence of it's driver.

Yes, I realize that. What I don't know is what the revs would be at 200mph. Too lazy to do the calc. :D

It couldn't be done with stock gearing. The car is also rev limited in top gear and that would have to be disabled too. Like you, I'm way too lazy to do the math. :) Besides, if I want to go 200MPH I've got that thing on the left sitting in the garage. :)

With enough horsepower a '91 to '96 NSX with the standard 5 speed can run upto 186mph at redline and the '97+ can run upto 202mph at redline.

I would think that a car with 490rwhp with the 6 speed should be able to reach 200mph. Not with me driving though! In my younger and dumber years I took a '94 911 Turbo to 181mph indicated; and when I hit a small crack in the pavement I felt the suspension stay up with the air underneath the car. It felt just like when you are taking off in a small plane and you start to rotate to take the weight off of the suspension. I know what happens next is flight and that didn't sound too good in the Porsche!

So with the exception of Carguy!, all those "too lazy to do the math" are also too lazy to go to the Gear Ratios section of the FAQ? :p

No. We just figured that we would give nsxtasy something to chime in on. :p

I'll let you know the top speed after the players run...
  :D Don't want to sound like "Dad," but be careful.
