Buying an NSX sight unseen

What advice would you give to someone who was considering the purchase of an NSX sight unseen?

I'm thinking the best thing to do is to locate the nearest Acura dealer to the seller myself, call them, and arrange for the seller to stop by for a pre-purchase inspection.

Of course, I'd run a carfax as well.

Apart from that though, what else would you recommend?

Thanks

That's a good plan you have. I presume you're buying private party.

I bought my '97 just over 3 yrs ago, but it was consigned at a dealership in Nashville, TN. They certified the car, and agreement was 1/2 car price + shipping charge in order to ship, and the other 1/2 upon my inspection. If I didn't like it, I would get my 1/2 back and just lose my shipping cost.

By the way, my car was the first yellow NSX I saw in person, and it was as nice as described. The owner had a clear title, so when I gave the 2nd 1/2 I took the title, etc and my car already had a temp tag ready to drive home. Paid the sales tax to the NJ DMV upon registration, and it took about 2 weeks for me to get the title because it was an out of state purchase.

You are on the right track. What might be a good idea is see if one of the members on this forum will take a look at the car for you. I think the advantage to that is a mechanic is going to tell you how the car is mechanically but a true NSX enthusiast will find all the little cosmetic problems.

That being said, I still would not buy sight unseen. If the car passes PPI and checks out ok with a member, just tell the owner that you still want to close the deal in person.

Good luck

I agree with hlweyl's advice. Also...

I would suggest asking around to find out which dealer (or independent mechanic) in the area does the most NSX service. If it's a small market with only one Acura dealer, there won't be much choice, but in a big city with a lot of dealers, some will have lots more NSX experience than others and will be familiar with the NSX items that most commonly fail. For example, the Chicago-Milwaukee area has ten Acura dealers, and only three do so much NSX service work that I would recommend them.

I bought mine this way...was nervous as hell and did a ton of checking but when I got it it was better than I expected...looks like new and drives perfect...I did get it from a dealer though that had tons of good feedback....I do feel very lucky
