Is it just the tires?

I've been reading the messages in the Tires & Wheels forum for a couple of hours now and can't help but wonder ...IS the NSX really a great handling car OR is it just a 'nice' car [handling wise] that has unbelievably good tires? I know that may sound like an odd question - but is the NSX more dependent upon its' tires than most cars?

Craig!! :)

I would say that every car's performance and behaviour is to a large extent dependant on the tires chosen by the manufacturer or subsequently by its owner. But you mustn't overlook the fact that the NSX's suspension is an engineering marvel in its own right, and that great tires alone does not translate into great handling. Try putting P Zeros on a Cutlass Supreme. I don't think the Oldsmobile will win any slalom contests even with that set-up.

It's both.

Lazarus mentions that a crappy handling car with great tires will have crappy handling.

A great handling car (such as the NSX) with crappy tires will also have crappy handling.

So the answer is, it's not just the tires. It's the car and the tires, working together.
