When people ask you what you drive...

Whenever the topic of cars comes up amongst people I meet in social settings and they ask me what I drive, I always tell them I drive a Honda. I don't mention anything about it being an NSX. I make no allusions to it being a sports car. I just tell them matter-of-factly that I drive a Honda. The reaction I usually get is, "oh, a Honda, great car, very reliable, good on gas, Accord or Civic?" I usually respond by saying, "yeah, something like that." And then when the gathering's over and the people disperse, inevitably a couple of those whom I had spoken to about my car being a Honda will see me getting into the NSX and it's quite amusing watching the expressions on their faces.

What do you guys tell people you drive?

Lazarus,
Actually, something close to your story as well.

"You have a car?"
"Yes, I do'"
"What kind of car?"
"Oh, nothing special, just a Honda" (start grinning inside by that time).
"Oh I see. Well to each his own I guess? Company car?"
"No, no company car. I'm a simple person. It's my own."
"I see. Too bad. Aways nice to have a company car. No fuss. I do have a company car. BMW as a matter of fact. Very very nice."
"I agree. BMW are nice cars. Not my style though. They're a bit too slow for me"
"Uhh????? BMW's slow? Are you joking me?"
"Well, no, of course not."
"What kind of Honda do you drive then"
By that time I am grinning wide...
"Oh, nothing special. Just a red one" :)

BMW is just an example. Every guy I've met who starts boosting about his company car is sometimes just sooo easy to lead on...

I come straight out with the NSX replies.

It depends on who does the asking. If it's a coworker or non-car type person, I tell them I drive the Stang. To fellow auto enthusiasts, I let them know about the NSX. I don't think I ever mention monikers. The topic of cars rarely comes up in normal conversation, however. :(

I tell them "An Acura." and it usually stops there... Otherwise you get either a blank stare because they don't know what an NSX is, or you get a blank stare because they DO know what it is an a lengthy conversation ensues...

If they know enough about cars to ask which one, then I tell them it's an NSX.

I was just with a friend who works at a BMW dealer, and he asked me what I drove.

"NSX."
"Oh, it's Nissan, right?"
"Actually, it's Acura."
"Oh, yah... what year?"
"It's 95."
"Man.. it's old.. time to get a new car?"
"It's not too bad.. it still runs. I only got it a year ago."
"How much did you pay for it?"
I told him what I paid for the car.
"What??? You are a fool.. You paid that much for 95 Nissan?"
"Acura."
"Yeah.. whatever.. the seller totally screwed you over."
"I guess..."
"Man.. can't believe you paid that much for 95 Nissan."
"Uh... Acura."

I cannot wait till he sees my car in spring.
 :D

I wonder if Corvette owners do the same, you know...tell people they drive a Chevrolet so as to conceal the fact that they drive a fast sports car. I tend to think that the majority of NSX owners prefer to be subtle and a little less conspicuous than the Ferrari, Viper, and Corvette crowd (apologies if anyone's offended that I lumped those three cars and their owners together).

I went into a the local AutoZone looking at purchasing a new battery. I asked the clerk which one I would need for my car. He took me over to the computer and started asking me info:

I can see the screens as he is entering the information.

What year?
91
What make?
Acura

Then the screen shows Legend, Integra, & NSX.

He looked at me and asked if it was the Legend or Integra.

I told him it was the NSX. He was very surprised.

hehe... Similar question asked while washing my car for the first time.
A very nice neighbor lady asked me if it was my new "sports car," so I replied "yes and no, new for me, but a used car." Then she asked me if it was a "Prelude," I said "kind of like one, but it 's an Acura." She said, "wow, that's cool, my (22 year old) son loves Acuras."
ergo, "like a Prelude but an old Acura version" seems to work for the general public.":D

GeNSX

Looking at the replies so far, I think it's terrific that so many NSX owners out there are so casual about the fact that they possess one of the greatest sports cars ever. It's really very encouraging to see that there's grace and civility left in this world.

It's a very understated car and I feel its more appropriate to behave in a similar fashion. I f I wanted to scream "pimp" then I could just get a BMW M3, a great car but which here in Birmingham has Pimpmobile written all over it.

Mind you sometimes its nice to be noticed. Driving home Monday afternoon, two young Asian lads pull up alongside at some traffic lights and wind down the window - "Nice car mate!!" Then they pointed out my vehicle licence disc had expired!!!!

Which brings up an interesting point...did Honda actively seek out this segment of the car-buying public (the understated, discerning sports car enthusiast who appreciates the precision and engineering of an IWC watch, who thinks diamond-encrusted Rolexes are utterly vulgar, but doesn't want to project the air of aloofness you see in a Patek Philippe or an Aston Martin), or was it this group of people who finally found, in the NSX, what they were looking for all these years?

God, I have too much time on my hands. :D

When strangers ask me, I generally say "I have an NSX."

To my friends and family who know what I drive, I describe it as "the red car." I don't feel right if I keep describing it as "THE NSX." Makes me sound up-petty.

If they ask I usually tell them either a Honda or an Acura. The ones that are persistent and ask for the model I will tell them, 'a really low to the ground one,' and if they still insist I will tell them it is an NSX.

What is even more fun is when people see it in person and ask what it is. My most common replies are:

1.) Civic with a body kit.

2.) Prelude with a body kit.

For some reason those answers work. The people just stand there and are like, 'Wow, nice..,' and then just wander off. :D

A friend of mine introduced me to someone and after a few minutes my friend said to me, "tell him what kind of car you drive". I replied with enthusiasm that I had an 86 Ford Festiva Primer color with glass packs, knight rider light in the front, wood paneling, and a gun rack. :D When you say that it distracts people and they forget to follow up.;)

For those who are cool and would know what an NSX is I tell them.

For those who may not know what it is I tell tham an Acura. This may lead to further questions so I take it as it comes.

For those who are car nuts I decide whether to divulge the NSX info on the basis of my ability to have long conversation!

I don't know what segment of the car buying population they were targeting but clearly not that segment who feel the need to be "flash". Here in the UK it's nice to be different. A porsche 911 is a great car but compared with the NSX they are two a penny. I like the idea of a little exclusivity!

I answer with "a used Honda" as well. If they seem like fans of Honda or cars in general, I will mention NSX and talk about how great Honda cars are, who Alex Zanardi is, etc. If their interest seem genuine, I have no problem showing the car to them.

If they seem only interested in status symbols and are not impressed by cheaper Hondas, I answer with Prelude, my other car. This way, I can go on and find more interesting people to talk to.

This is just like me!:) I tell my friends to not refer to me as the "guy with an NSX" with new people. I want people to like me for me, you know?

I do the same thing - I don't like talking about it because it makes you seem uppity. I don't like lying either, so my response is usually:

"I've got a beater for everyday and an old Honda for fun."

That usually shuts them up. If they ask more or see me get into either one, it usually evolves into a bit longer conversation. Beater is a 330Ci.
