What Wheel Combo?

Hi guys,
I wanted to expand on part of my mods thread from the main branch, so here it is:

Given my 2000 NSX with the 16-17 inch wheel combo and the new 2003 17-17 inch wheel combo, I am trying to figure out why some people go with 17-18 inch combos or 18-19 inch combos? I know there are mass and weight issues even with super light forged wheels at 18-19 inches, but for those of you who have made the switch how did it really effect overall handling or performance of the NSX? I think stock razor sharp handling is great even if roll is pretty execessive, even if the "bling-bling" factor of massive wheels is more than I can bear to resist any longer. :) So, what do you say?

just ordered stock tires. Then watched mtv cribs car special and realized that I need dubs or bigger. (just kidding/but stock size seems uncool and small.

I will watch this thread with interest as I might return 16/17 combo and go with new wheels and tires.

Talk me out of it. Prime time players

dilemma...

hmmm... I am in that similar dilemma. I currently have the stock 15/16 setup, and have found a set of wheels I like. Now I am debating whether to go w/ 16/17 or 17/18. I do love the "crisp-tight handling" of my car as is w/ the stock setup. And there is ease of tire selection (cost) w/ the 16/17 if I opt for that.

Another question I'd have is this... If i opted for the 16/17 setup, the aftermarket wheels are 16x7 and 17x8. That is only 1inch diff' in F-R tire width, is that ok??? [oem is 16x7 and 17x8.5]

What sort of rear size could I run w/ 17x8?

Thanks in advance...:)

According to Bridgestone's specs, you could fit the '94-01 stock rear size of 245/40-17 on a 17x8, but nothing wider (not even the '02-04 stock rear size of 255/40-17). If it were my car, I would not get 17" wheels that are narrower than the '94-01 stock ones...

I went 17/18 then 18/18 then 18/19. Save yourself the trouble. Get what you REALLY want :) 18/19 with good tires .... can barely feel difference in handling and with right sizes no tcs or rubbing issues.

See, now this was the type of first hand experience that I was looking for... someone who spent 18 months and $20,000 in wheels and tires in pursuit of the ultimate answer! Then the 18/19 HRE 847 5-spokes with the Pirelli P-Zero Rossas will be the way to go!

225-35-18 (F) with 275-30-19 (R) or optional MASSIVE 305-25-19 would be my choice! Anyone other than Ken think that is a bad idea? ;)

What size 18/19 sizes are you using and what kinds of tires?

Well, the service director at the biggest NSX servicer in the Midwest keeps shaking his head at how many oversized wheels he's been sending out for repair due to their greater susceptibility to damage from potholes. But if that's what you're looking for, go for it! Your region's wheel repair shop will love the business. And at $389 per rear tire for those 305's, so will the friendly folks at the Tire Rack... :D

Seriously, though, I'm not here to tell anyone what to do. I just point out the pros and cons of various setups. After taking them into consideration, if you still want the look of 18"/19" wheels - the look is their primary benefit - then by all means go for it. Your car, your money - you should get what YOU want.

don tell him 18/19 is the way to go ....g-man don and me have been through a few sets of wheels already and ever time from when i meet don he upgrade and he is super happy just like i am ..:D :) ... i love 18/19 for street use and with hre custom offsets no rubbing or tcs issues..

Haha! I knew I could count on the "voice of reason". I have found that most Forged Wheels are stronger for street use and I try to drive around the pot holes and not into them. :) I do think I will shy away from the 305's just for sheer cost involved. As far as the folks at tire rack, they have supplied tired for all 26 of my cars over the last 15 years, so I am sure they are quite happy no matter what I buy. :)

As for Ben, I figured i would get an 18/19 vote from him. ;) But it is likely Don that has swayed me the most. I was waiting for someone to post: "DON'T DO IT!" but after reading the "go-fast Crack-pipe" thread in the main group, now I can see why. You guys just don't know when to say when. :D

So, now the only question is my choice of rubber. I hate the S03s so will have to figure something else out. I can't find any Michelin Pilot Sports this size. The Pirelli P-Zero just doesn't hit the numbers according to Tire Rack. Any other ideas on big rubber?

Yup ....

Its sorta like when Feyd Rabban in Frank Herberts Dune so profoundly asked "why prolong the inevitable?"

If you dont get 18/19 now; most likely get them later. I would also throw the bbk into that equation too. Good idea to decide on those first, if applicable. It sucks to decide on bbk after the fact. (ask me how I know)

What other rim/tire set will look awsome, fit perefectly, come right out to edge of the fender in a custom offsett, look fantastic rolling, and match the overall appearance and distinction of an already awsome vehicle.

Nice choice on the 847's ...they look great. I have to give a nod to the brushed or polished finishes, they look super cool and will never chip paint.

WOW! That is scary. Either you already talked to Ben about my order or you had the same discussion with him yourself on your order. If you weren't 1,500 miles apart, I would swear this was a setup. ;)

Well I think I have talked to everyone and their momma about wheels. Seems like I did the same thing with wheels as you have done with cars. You really cant go wrong with the HRE's. I get more compliments on the wheels than I do on the car. I have my next (hopefully last) set of 18/19 coming any day now.

I think so. But it ultimately depends on how far from the fender the wheel size is. If its custom size and fits perfectly out to the fender, You will be ready for some rally racing if you dont change springs/suspension. Thats my opinion. Heres a few pics of 18/18 set up with stock suspension.
