Anyone ever buy a car online?

I live in a pretty small town so there is really no selection for used cars. So lately i've been looking around online, ebay, autotrader.com, etc. I buy stuff online all the time but I just don't know how safe it is to buy a car I could potentially have never seen. Any experiences you have had or heard of would be helpful.

I've purchased stuff online, but not a car. However, it's not uncommon for people to buy their NSX out-of-state. Just excercise the normal precautions - have the car inspected by a reputable mechanic/dealer (as well as a local enthusiast if possible), check the seller's references, use escrow if you don't trust the seller, and you should be fine. Good luck!

Bought my M3 on EBAY. It was inspected by a BMW dealer of my choice where the guy lived. Also had the full history from CARFAX as well as from the owner including all of the service. I picked up the car and made final payment at that time with the down payment in escrow. I found my NSX online but went to Boston to look at 2 of them. Bought the first one I saw and drove it home after a major hassle as MA does not have dealer plates.

I have bought several vehicles online, some sight unseen, with no problems. I did make sure that the funds were retrievable if I was not happy with the vehicle.
Surprisingly online I have only been screwed for a pair of sneakers, and I have bought a ton of item over the net too.
I did sell a Kyosho NSX on line and was screwed when the buy said he never received it and I know for a fact that I sent it out. Paypal refunded him the money because I did not insure the item. Lesson learned...insure all items for that point on.

I found my current NSX on autotrader. After emailing owner and talking with him on phone several times we made the deal.
Now get this, he lives about 3 hrs away from me and put the car on a flat bed and delivered it to my work. I had the car a couple of days before I got a chance to go by credit union and pick up check to send to him. Talk about trust !!

I bought my NSX off of Ebay. I didn't have any problems. You have to talk to the guy and feel him out. If you have any doubts, don't give any money until you see the car. To fly somewhere and check it out may cost you a couple hundred dollars, but it is better than costing you 30k or 40k.
