Nippon Oil Filters?

Hi All,

I didn't get any response to this question when I posted it in the General Discussion forum, so I thought I would post it here too just in case some of you don't browse in there.

My Question Is:

Since a large number of the engine parts for the NSX are made by Nippon-Denso (ND), have/do any of you use their oil filters as opposed to the OEM Honda oil filters(which are made by the Toyo Roki Manufacturing Company)? Good? Bad?

Thanks

At the NSXCA discount prices available, no need to change from OEM:).

Yes, but that only brings them down from $15 to $12, unless you buy in bulk.

Side by side the ND and the Honda filters look the exact same (even in the unique way the rubber seal is), but the ND ones are Just $5.

I'm cool with the high price of a lot of things on these cars (timing belts, water pumps, tires, even spark plugs), but $10 to $12 for an oil filter just pushes my limits for some reason. I'd never use a Fram or ACdelco filter on my car, but with ND being all over my engine already, why not use their filters? Anyone?

The filter looks to be the short filter, the part # for the NSX is 15400-PL2-004

I agree, it does look like the short Acura Legend filter that some people believe is also made for our cars.
I read somewhere before that the larger OEM "NSX" filter was larger because it filters the oil better. For a few bucks more, I have piece of mind, but thats just me...

Thats good to know! I've only have one oil change since I just recently bought the car and it was changed when the timing belt was done.

Toyo Roki is an OEM

Just for your information, Toyo Roki is one of the oil filter OEM for Honda. Honda has a handful of OEMs making oil filters for them and Toyo Roki is one of the Japanese OEMs. You can sometimes tell who manufactured your Honda filter by looking on the side of the filter.

As for long/short filter, following factory recommendation is always a good thing. However, shorter filter means possibily less filter element surface area which means shorter filter life. Logical solution is to replace the filter/oil more often.

Just for your information, that is what I said above in my original post. ;) That is why I was wondering who had used the Nippon filters, since Nippon-Denso (ND) makes all kinds of parts for Honda as well.

I'm not sure what smaller filter you guys are talking about. The Nippon one I picked up at my local Foreign Auto Parts store is the exact same size, dimentions, and design as the OEM Honda/Toyo Roki one. If it had been a different size I would have just handed it back to them, because like a lot of you have said, different size usually means different flow rate and filtering capability.

I seem to remember the oil filter discussion a few years ago and our "woodworks guy", Kent told us the blow-by valve in the OEM filter is set at a higher pressure than others. What this means is non OEM filters let unfiltered oil get through. We all switched immediately.
