Currently the April 24th track event advance sign up list is 80% NSX owners.

NSX's:
Mark Johnson (Honda Trophy NSX)
Dan Mangan (NSX)
John Sutton (NSX)
Michael Ring (NSX)
MAD MAX (Biplane NSX)
Mark & Trevor Allan (OTC NSX)
Greg Hardee (OTC NSX)
Alex "G-Man" Vizcarra (GruppeM NSX)
Your Name Here!

and I got to thinking, what fun it would be to have an NSX only open track day and then finish it off with an all NSX race?........The idea is to put on an event something like this:

NSXDAYS

without having to go to Europe (where they have muzzled all the lawyers I guess) to hold it. Spring Mountain may not have the European "ambiance" of SPA, but it won't be raining, is a lot closer and a lot cheaper, [last year SPA was $1200.00/each for the weekend track fee] and there are a lot less in the way of stationary vertical objects to hit if your ego gets in the way of your better judgement.

Somehow I convinced the NSXCA (hereafter referred to as "the club" - THANKS STEVE!) that we could pull this off, and now I'm proud to announce that we will TRY and have this first ever NSX only open track and race event! (co sponsored by Dali Racing and the club)

So how does that "sponsorship" thing play out?

THE CLUB will contribute $35.00 towards the entry fee for each of the first 34 club members that sign up, (for the race or open track groups) and if you are not currently a member, if not - what is your major malfunction mister? - of course you are welcome to join to get your $35.00. Ask and you shall be joined! (it won't event hurt - just ask keN ) The $35.00 will be handed out in poker chips (not really, it will be cash) at the track, so this is one "prize" that you need to be present to "win"!

Dali Racing (ie me) will do all the work to organize and put on the event. (so what else is new?) If we have a full house, I'll make event T-shirts too.

FAQ:
General Event info is (as usual) posted here.

The current general event info posted shall pertain to the "open track" section of the day - we will add a link next week that pertains more specifically to the race portion of the day.

So, before you ask:

Q: GASP! is this actual "wheel-to-wheel" racing? - ARE YOU MAD?
A: Yes, the race portion of the day is classic "wheel to wheel" white knuckled fun. Personally, I'm not planning on contacting anything other than the track surface with my wheels and intend that my fenders will stay the same color all weekend. I hope all the participants in the event will feel the same way. I've been called worse.

Q: Do I need to have an SCCA or other "race license" to enter?
A: No, you don't have to have a racing license to participate - if the Europeans can do it - so can we. This is the "Wild West" where the men are men and the individual is actually responsible for their own actions remember? ["Are we not MEN?" - 2 seconds off your qualifying lap time free if you know where I borrowed that from - 1st person with the correct answer only - [Andy figured it out]

Q: I have a stock NSX and it is my first "race" event and there might be faster cars out there and I'm feeling inadequate and all my latent insecurities about the mods that I didn't do yet because Honda knows everything and NSX's are perfect stock as they come from the factory are making me pee in my pants - I mean, someone might pass me - ME! a legend in my own mind!
A: Yes, all 5 performance categories will be on the track at the same time. We will line the faster cars up first so they will not be passing the slower cars until the field is stretched out over at least 20 laps. Since the track is 2 miles long it ought to take the first of the faster cars ~ 20 laps to lap the slowest car. You will be expected to be able to look through the windshield and look in the mirror however - if I can do it you can too. That means there will be some passing, and potentially not all of it will be attempted in the most safe and obvious "passing zone" areas. If someone is clearly faster than you, ie, they started in front of you but somehow are now "magically" 6 inches from your rear bumper - so what? there will always be someone somewhere that is faster, smarter, richer or more beautiful than you, get used to it and be learn to be polite and let them pass - the NSX you save may be your own. At least you can always learn to drive better.:D

Q: How are you going to time the laps?
A: All lap timing will be on the "honor system" done by HOTLAP timer receivers; so you will need one – OR we need to rent some “real” timers – that adds to the event cost, so go get a HOTLAP Receiver - you might use it again anyway...if you are really cheap, borrow one.
here are some good sources:

HOTLAP1
HOTLAP2
HOTLAP3

We will clear the memory of the receivers before the qualifying session.

Q: I WANT A TROPHY - will I get one?
A: Yes there will be a cheesy $0.65 trophy at the end of the event for the winner of each category - and yes, that is all I will spend on them just to remind all of the participants that we are not F1 drivers with the 2004 championship riding on this - the last race of the season. I kid you not, this trophy is not worth damaging your car for, so be a gentleman out there.

Q: What class will my car be in?
A: We will have 5 classes to enter your car in should you choose to participate in the race portion of the day.(this is not required to attend) It was suggested that I have 14 classes and 14 trophies so that "everyone would be a winner" (or was that a whiner?) but I'm not interested in being politically correct:

Stock
Modified-a
Modified-b
Prototypes-a
Prototypes-b

See rules for class definitions. You can download the race class rules on the event page after Wednesday 3/17/04 or ask me for a copy & I'll e-mail it to you.

Class Rules

I have the final say on which group your car will be classified in so don't try and cheat just to make yourself look good for a few laps - this is all for fun, not championship points - at least not yet anyway.

Q: What about insurance?
A: What about it? Racing is unpredictable, and you might damage your car, yourself, or both should YOU CHOOSE to participate, you might die crossing the street too. What would be the more fun way to go?

Q: OK so there is no insurance, what about corner workers? What about an ambulance?
A: We will have at least 4 corners workers and they will have flags - OBEY THEM. We also will have an ambulance on site. They normally sleep through the day, lets not wake them up.

Q: Who is responsible for teching my car?
A: DOH - YOU. Find a good mechanic that can check the car for you. There will be no inspections at the track except for classification.

Q: What if I crash?
A: Shit happens - Someone will give you a ride home.

--------------------

We need to have a full event to pay the bill and to "qualify" for this to be a club sponsored event, so if enough of you do not enter to cover the cost, 2 weeks prior to the date of the event the event will be opened to non club people, and the club subsidy will be taken away and put back into the general fund. (so as the Democrats like to say, vote early and often!)

We have 14 "race slots" and 20 "open track" slots to fill.
Race Group: $225.00*
Open Track Group: $100.00*

*Remember that is BEFORE the club "discount" is applied, both groups will have access to the track for 5 hours of open track in the am, and then the qualifying and the actual race for the race group is in the afternoon after lunch. We are giving the open track people a deal so they will come and have fun and then stay to watch us wild and crazy guys race, and the race guys are also paying more since they are using more of the available time etc..

We have had the wavier of the Millennium written and donated to the cause by one of our very own NSX drivers. MTIA to him for helping make this event ("...hereafter referred to as "the event"..." <g>) a possibility. It is available for downloading here.
Basically it says you are capable of making the decision to enter and taking FULL responsibility for your own actions.

Lets have one fun and SAFE event and see how it goes and then maybe have another someplace else?

Hope to see you in my mirrors............:D

If time permits, I'm planning to attend the open track driving. In general, I think people want the following:

More track time -
With less than 40 cars, you can drive till you get sore.

Get good instruction (for the newbies like myself) -
I'll bet that you can get someone that are instructor level driver to help you find the lines, turn in, apex, track out points.

A safe event -
Judging from the list of track guru already signed up, I think it is going to be safe to be amount the more experienced drivers. Even with the scarey disclaimer from Mark for legality reasons, I still think that it is safer than pushing the car on public roads.

For newbies ....If you want to drive your pride and joy home in tact, you need to first have the mindset that you are not going out there to prove anything. Just drive way within your limits at first and at the end of the day, you'll be tired but exhilarated.

The race will be a bonus for us to watch after the open track driving. It is time to support the NSXCA guys.

are we not men...

we are Devo........keep the 2 seconds. :)

Question:

Are the open track session divided into run groups? Or is that a open 5 hour session where the participants drive until they are tired?

I think there are run groups, per the web site. I'm wondering, if there will be volunteer instructors to help us newbies? The answer to this question would definately help me to decide on whether to attend or not. :D

If you take a look at the list of people that have already signed up, you'll notice that some of them were instructors at last year's NSXPO. May be Mark can arrange a few instructors to help us make this a safe and fun event. ;) I'm willing to give up the $35, contribution from NSXCA, to subsidize for the instructors that volunteer their time to help us.

Normally we have it divided into two groups that rotate every 30 minutes, we were thinking that we might just open the track at 8:45am and let everyone run till lunch at 1:00pm.

5 hours is a lot of track time; and we anticipate that the race group will be on and off the track a lot checking things so I doubt that all 34 cars will be headed for the 1st corner at the same time.

that depends upon how the race cars are running I'm sure. :D

The more experienced guys don't need your cash, but I think a thank you will work great - plus if you don't kill them while they are helping you that would be awesome ;)

5 hours is a lot of track time for $65.00.

My car is already "setup" so barring last minute breakdowns I'll be available. I know Mark Allan will help out if you ask for his autograph. :D
Greg and Alex might be available too. I'lll ask them.

ALL track events are safer that "pushing the car on public roads" - no one is coming the other way. :D

ALL participants need to do that. The alternative is usually a flatbed.

Are you insinuating that you are not a member yet?
JUST DO IT! :D

I can't make it to this first event, as I will be on the road at the OTC April 17-22, and I uh....gotta get back home to the wife and baby after that so they don't divorce me!

But I'll put up a $100 prize money to the overall winner of the race group, courtesy of Pulp Racing.

-Doug

And be ready to duke it out with the Flamemobile in the near future! :)

Darn! I was hoping to catch a ride in the Pulp Trailer as I don't have an enclosed trailer any more. :( But I figured that'd be the case after OTC...Good Luck!!!!!!!!!
