I was looking to lease an 04 in January of this year on the East Coast. I talked to 4 dealers and all said that no cars were available. Either they all conspire to not sell/lease cars or Honda just does not want to be bothered with making any more of the current model.

One dealer after realizing that no cars were available said that the Audi TT was a much better car and he had plenty of them. (this was an Acura dealer with an Audi franchise as well). I could not believe it and just walked out.

I bought a 2000 with 12000 miles and lived happily ever after.

Model Year is defined as January - October.
Those numbers are just flat-out wrong. Honda's own website shows that in the United States, they sold 221 NSXs in 2003 and 233 in 2002 (those are broken down by calendar year, not model year), and the year-to-date figures as of October of each year were 206 and 212, respectively. Model year 2004 is still underway, so there are no reliable figures at this point in time.

You forgot door number 3: Some dealers lie. There are 2004 NSXs around, including dealers on the East Coast. Some dealers don't think people are serious about buying and/or don't want to be bothered enough to negotiate with another dealer for their NSX allocation - so they lie.

I'm sure Hendrick Acura in Charlotte, or Greenwich Acura in Connecticut, will be happy to sell you one in their showroom, to cite two examples. There are lots of others, and in fact, any dealer can look in the computer and find the inventory of new NSXs for all dealers throughout the country. What you need to do is find a different dealer, one who is interested in your business.

hmm...is it possible the honda figures are sales to dealers whereas the mag figures are sales to actual customers?

No. The figures on Honda's press website are for sales to consumers, not to dealers. That's why you still see a few sales for models that were discontinued months earlier than the sales are reported.

(Besides, if there were 170 or so NSXs unsold each year, it wouldn't be so unusual to see them in showrooms...)

That has proved to be very difficult where I live. The 2 dealers you mentioned are 200+ miles away. Where I live they dare you to buy a car no matter what the make, model or year. When I bought my Mercedes years ago I went to 7 local dealers before one even let me drive one.

I did find a dealer with an NSX (used). They were not interested in getting me a new NSX. So I bought the used.

P.S. I realize you're not looking any more, but Pohanka Acura in Virginia has a new NSX-T and I don't think they're 200+ miles away...

Corrected the time period in which the #'s were taken. Same query...

I talked to Pohanka in January and they said they would not get any new cars until after the Lease Deal which ended March 31 (at least that was the termination date in January). So I guess they were right. They were not willing to get one from another dealer at the time.

I talked to another dealer in the area for 2 weeks until they finally figured out that they could not get a car (or were not willing to, I could never figure them out.) Then they insisted I needed an Audi TT, a much better car and by golly they had a lot full of them. Imagine that.

A dealer actually tried to downsell you from a $90k list price NSX to a $40k list price Audi TT with a straight face?

Did you laugh in their face? They should have at least tried to push you towards an RS6... A TT????????????????

I was actually quite speechless. I just kind of stared at them and wondered to myself how Acura intended to sell cars with a dealer like this. I just left.
