This guy has a great ad on ebay, and it's not a scam for once. I probably shouldn't have read his ad considering that I'm getting married this Friday (04/30/04).

price keeps jumping!

When it was first mentioned here the bidding was at about $600. A couple of hours later $900, then $2700. Then, in a matter of minutes it has climbed to over $17K and these are bidders with some feedback so they can't just be people yanking the guy's chain... can they?

Edit: just refreshed the page and now the darn dress is over $30K

Whoops - make that over $160K Hope the guy knows he's not getting paid...

Okay, now we're at over $28 million - people really get anything out of doing this? I must be missing something...

after a bunch of bid retractions and "administrative cancellations". Ebay should yank the accounts of everyone who placed a phony bid.

The guy selling the dress is being interviewed this morning on the Today show.

Hmmm....Maybe I'll have something to ebay after my wedding this Friday?

Just saw the interview - the guy was actually quite funny. Says he will have his own web site up today or tomorrow.

Ebay had pruned the bidding back to $17K but it has shot up to over $2.3 million again as I write this. Hope Ebay is watching it.

Edit: He's finally changed it so that you must be pre-approved in order to bid. It stands at $25K right now which should keep him in beer and game tickets for a while.

You want to laugh? When the phony bidding was climbing through the first few million I sent a report to Ebay putting a few of the user ids in the right space on the form. Soon after that they were cancelling bids left and right so I figured they were on top of it. Today I get the following from Ebay's Safe Harbor:

We are concerned about violations on the site and have thoroughly
investigated your report. In accordance with our site policies, we have
found that there is not enough evidence to show that a violation has
taken place.

When will these companies figure out that responses that might as well have been written by a robot do nothing but aggravate the customer? More to the point, when will Ebay get on the ball and take ownership of the rampant fraud/counterfeit goods, shill bidding, account hijacking, etc, etc that is plagueing their site? Hey, here's a thought Ebay: how about a button/link on every freaking auction page to report counterfeit goods or fraudulent auctions instead of making people absolutely jump through hoops to report things only to get nonsensical responses like the one quoted above? Nah, that would be too simple...
