Are Pep Boy's spacers any good (are they hubcentric)

So I go to Superautobacs to install tires on my enkei aegis rims. When the attempt to mount the rims and tires, it was a no go 'cuz I needed 5mm spacers. I told them I wanted just to go to pepboys and buy them, but they were like "not you have to H&R spacers because you need longer lug nuts and we have to special order them". Well, fine, OK. I pay them for the tires and spacers and the install, and was told that I could come back and install since the set up was paid for.

So the H&R's arrive today, I go to Autobacs to have the rims installed and that idiot service manager wanted to charge me an additional $140 to install said H&R spacers. I told him that I was informed that I had already paid for everything, and he was like "no I have to charge you for the install of the spacers, you just paid for the mounting and balancing of the tires." So, long story short, I talk to his boss and they say that they will mount the spacers at no additional cost. Okay, whatever.

So when they mount the rims, they realize that the factory lug nuts were long enough so that I didn't need the H&R's. They, of course, didn't bother to measure the lug nuts before they told me to order the spacers.

So now I have the H&R spacers that I paid $60 for (for two fronts), that I may not need (since I didn't need the longer nuts). I go down to pepboys and they have a set of two spacers for $7.99. The question I have is, is there any reason I should keep the H&R's instead of returning them and getting the Pepboys ones? To me, they pretty much look the same (a piece of metal with five drilled holes in 'em). I know that the H&R's are hubcentric, but are the Pepboy's spacers also hubcentric? If so, why shouldn't I use them and save $52? Any help greatly appreciated.

The PepBoys spacers are not hubcentric. You can probably get away with running 5mm spacers on stock lugs on the NSX, depending on the wheel. Just count the number of full turns you're getting on the lug to be certain. With the flat spacers that PepBoys has, you run a risk of significant vibration, plus the decreased support of the wheel by only having the lugs providing support instead of the hub. IMO, not worth it.

Happy motoring,

Ben

I think I have those Pep Boys spacers...not sure, previous owner put them on. Mine aren't hubcentric, so what I did was purchase hubcentric rings....find a store that carries your wheels and ask them to order a set for your NSX.

if the spacers are mounted correctly, the lug nuts are not the only support as you are stating. The spacers are squeezed between the wheel and hub, and provided you apply the correct torque to your lug nuts, the weight is supported by the friction forces between the wheel, spacer and hub and not the lug nuts which are still only working in tension.
