Why no JDM parts for U.S. Market?

I have been wondering why Honda of Japan will not allow the U.S. customers to simply order parts from Japan made for the Type S or Type R models. I understand they want to keep the Type S and Type R unique for those who purchase them, but the U.S. customers do not have a choice to purchase these models. Obviously the lack of air bag in the steering wheels are against the DOT laws. And it may not be practical for them to even ship any of these models to the U.S. I was told Acura had problems selling the 50 Zanardi NSX models because the suspension was too stiff for everyday driving? However, things such as Type S seats or recaro seats from the Type R etc.. are not against DOT laws from what I know and many NSX enthusiasts like my self would love to have the ability to walk into our closest Acura dealership and ask for the "upgrades" What would Honda have to loose? By giving us this opportunity. I would assume the dealerships would make good profit after all this model has been out since 1991 and all parts would fit these models. Any ideas on why this is simply out of the question?
