Paint discolored from storing T top.. anyone else?

On my 01 spa yellow, I took the top off and had it in the storage location for about a week. This is a new car and the top was perfect. Now I notice that the paint is noticably darker where the top contacts the rubber bumper right at the latch. There appears to have been a chemical reaction between the rubber bumper and the paint. I've tried a mild cleaner and abrasive, but its not on the surface. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm thinking of cutting a thin cotton patch to glue over the rubber so it does not directly contact the paint.

Do you think this is a warranty matter for Acura: If so.. should I get the top repainted, or ask for a new factory painted one?

Any ideas how to get the spot out?

Thanks

It appears that the black pigment of the rubber transferred into the paint. The top does get very hot above the engine. Are there any chemists or paint experts out there? I wonder how deeply it goes and if it could be sanded out without going through the clear coat?

Wow, this is the first I've heard of.

Are you sure that the black pigment from the rubber has soaked into the paint? The NSX goes through a 27 step paint process which includes "baking/drying" time, so that when they leave the factory there should be no issues with painted pieces.

Did you store the top wet? Did/could any other chemical come in contact with the top during storage?

It is highly unlikely that a weeks storage would make the black pigment from the rubber soak through the paint, however I'm no expert.

I would definitely take this issue up with the dealer under warranty. If they can order a new one that's pre-painted then great, if not I'm sure they'll know what to do. Don't settle for anything less than perfection, especially on such a new car!

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Happy ending: I took it to the dealer who used a more aggressive abraisive than I did. I used 3M imperial hand glaze. He used rubbing compound. After buffing, the mark is gone. I plan to use thin double-stick tape and cover the rubber bumper with a piece of cotton t-shirt material so that only cotton touches the paint.

3M Imperial Hand Glaze is not abrasive. It's a show car glaze, designed to "fill in" light scratches on a temporary basis.

If you had used the slightly abrasive 3M or Meguiars Swirl Mark Remover, it probably would have come off. These materials are less abrasive than most rubbing compounds.

Let us know how the cotton covering technique works out.

I had the same problem, I used a little TCA and then rubbed it out then waxed it. I now use a white cotton towel to protect my top when I store it. You can't see where the stain was, just like new.
