The Infamous Worn Bolster

Almost every NSX I've seen has the infamous worn bolster - ranging from typical cracks to worn off sections due to abrasions. How does one deal with this by ordering new leather section and taking it to a upholster shop - or is there such thing as a repair that will make it impossible to tell it was repaired?

Just have my own NSX for a couple of weeks and it too has the worn bolster. Instead of having it replaced I bought some black shoe-polish (50 cents) and carefully used it on the bolster. Of course you don't get back the original finish but the bolster is at least black again and also shines quite nicely. You'd have to look twice to see the original finish isn't there and from the outside you don't see it at all.
Did it these week and it seems to hold up quite well. I think I will repeat the treatment every week for the coming time cause I think that will improve the looks over time.
BTW, the finish doesn't rub of if you apply it correctly.

I had mine replaced by Top Shop in Phoenix. It looks great and I would reccommend doing this rather than "inking in" a temporary fix. The NSX is a great car and if there is a solution to a problem as simple as this, I see no justification for cutting corners. Call Cory at Top Shop and he will help you.

The dealer sells replacement leather pieces, so if only the bolster is worn/torn then you can replace just that one piece. It's OEM so what more could you ask for?

There's a few options out there and they kinda depend on just how worn the bolster is:

1) get the OEM piece
2) upholstery shop
3) "ghetto fabulous" engineering

The first solution works well but may stretch the other pieces of leather to which the bolster is attached, and may actually rip those pieces. In addition, if you have an ivory interior, you're SOL, b/c Acura doesn't make them anymore (according to my dealer). The second option works very well too depending on the shop. They really can do "magic" with leather and dye. The third option works great depending on the wear on the bolster.

I've had this happen too and have decided just to get the seats re-leathered once I get some racing seats put in. I kinda ran out of my "ghetto engineering" methods.

At the first signs of wear I applied my preventative fix, using $7 of clear vinyl from TAP Plastics. It sounds worse than it looks:

To install the vinyl, you have to remove the seat from the car, then remove the lower and upper center cushions and the panel which has the control buttons on it. I have had this in place for 5 years with no adverse effects, other than the fact that Harry S. says it looks like his grandmother's couch.

Oops, Geocities apparently doesn't like me to link directly to the image, so you probably have to paste the above URL into a new browser window rather than just clicking on it. If somebody with image hosting wants to copy it and provide an inline image, I'd appreciate it.

No offense, but that looks like sh#t!!
My opinion on all wear items is this: you bought a hi-perf car- use it, have fun, and when parts get worn beyond acceptance, replace 'em. I dont see the point of preserving your NSX for the guy you sell it too down the road. Just my opinion.
