A stupid question about Ring & Pinion

I just bought a 92 NSX not too long ago.

I don't know what ring & ping in the car?

The previous owner had the gears changed to Japanese short gears. I got receipts and checked all part numbers. According to receipt that dealer also replaced ring and pinion.

I found two information on the forum that I think I can determine what I have.

1. The RPM for either 5-speed in 5th gear at 80 mph with different R&P's
is shown below.

R&P RPM@80mph
4.06 3440
4.23 3584
4.55 3855
*This is from someone's post on this forum.*

2. 4.235 pros: cheaper ($1000). OEM quality because it is OEM. "Livelier" feel (not neck snapping, but like you removed all the spare tire/tools/cats/headers & that overweight 'instructor' you were hauling around the track etc. and now you can GO! <G>). Not noticeably "buzzy" (3500 rpm turns into 3660 - not that much louder). No new noises at all. *I found this in FAQ*

I took my car out tonight and checked RPM@80mph in 5th gear. it was closer to 3600. Definitely not over 3600.

I did not find any 4.235 parts on the receipt as listed in FAQ.

Do I have 4.235 or stock?

Is there any other way to find out this by myself?

Thanks a lot

I would say you do have the 4.23 and the tach is off slightly.

I'm not so sure. Either of two things is possible:

1. As Larry indicates, your tach may be accurate and you have a 4.235 R&P.

2. Your tach may read 4 percent high and you have a stock 4.062 R&P.

I think option 2 is possible; I don't think a 4 percent error in the tach is all that much, and may actually be designed that way from the factory; for example, this would cause it to read at redline (8000 RPM) when it's actually at 7700 RPM.

You say that your receipt shows that the dealer changed the R&P. My guess is, if your receipt shows the part numbers for the 4.235 R&P:

Final drive gear(Ring gear): 41233-PR8-J00
Pinion/countershaft: 23220-PR8-J00

then Larry is correct (option 1).

Buf if your receipt shows the part numbers for the stock R&P:

Final drive gear(Ring gear): 41233-PR8-000
Pinion/countershaft: 23220-PR8-000

then my guess is that you have the stock 4.062 R&P and your tach reads 4 percent high (option 2).

I don't recall for my NSX off the top of my head, but both my Mom's NSX and my NSX show different RPMs when cruising the same speed in second gear, and we both have the stock R&P and stock gears, so there is some variation. It was at least on the order of 1-300 RPMs at 40 mph (I was dead on at 4,000, basically, and she was substantially different. YRevsMV

also don't forget tire size,as it will affect your speedo acuracy if the tires are not stock size.I'm closer to 4000rpm at 80mph in 5th with 4.55 and shorties.

Thanks for all replies

My tires are stock. I will check receipt again tonight. Unless the origianl R&P was broken, I just don't understand why someone wanted to spend extra money to replace R&P from stock to stock.

Unless you've had your speedometer re-calibrated, using a non-stock tire size will not affect the indicated speed on your speedometer. It will, however, affect your actual speed.

Tire wear can also make your actual (but not indicated) speed vary by up to 2 percent.
