Hi all,

I'm in the process of installing a in dash Alpine DVA 7996 DVD player with the Alpine M760 monitor and have run into a problem. the monitor is displaying "monitor off for your safety". I haven't hooked up the footbrake and handbrake wires yet because this will only allow the monitor to turn on when you press the brake pull up the handbrake and release the footbrake. Does anyone know if there is a way to by pass this to allow the monitor to work all the time.(obviously the driver won't watch but maybe the passenger would like to.) I've contacted Alpine and they told me there is a sequence to allow this but they cannot give it to me because of liability reasons.

they make a by-pass for that and ive seen it for sale on ebay....im too lazy to find it rite now but i hope this helps.

i have that problem too ...you can just hook it up to a switch , one to ground the other wire to the hand brake . any normal switch .
cause in my state ,ma. its consider drunk driving if you drive and watch at the same time . i dont know if its true ... but alphine strict on this stuff.

I doubt that it's considered drunk driving (driving while intoxicated), but it might be considered reckless driving.

well all i can find in MA laws about this is from:
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/laws/mgl/90%2D13.htm

it doesnt list any penalty, it just says:

CHAPTER 90. MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT.

Chapter 90: Section 13. Safety precautions for proper operation and parking of vehicles and buses.

No person shall drive any motor vehicle equipped with any television viewer, screen or other means of visually receiving a television broadcast which is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat, or which is visible to the driver while operating such motor vehicle.

nothing about DVDs or other video though

Does anybody know if the Clarion unit has the same safety(?) feature on it. I'm considering going with that monitor.

all you have to do is ground that "safety" wire that goes to your hand brake. simple as that, i have a kenwood in dash TV and also an Eclipse TV. all you have to do is ground that wire and it will work full time

I have tried to ground both the wires (Hand Brake and Footbrake) and it still does not work. Here is exactly what I did.

1. Handbrake wire and footbrake wire grounded both and tried but no results.

2. Hooked up handbrake wire to the little switch on the handbrake that turns the handbrake light on the dash on/off and hooked up the footbrake wire to the brake light in the trunk still no result.

Do I have to hook the handbrake lead up to the handbrake switch and hook it to ground.

In an above post it says just hook the handbrake lead to ground what do I do with the footbrake lead and where does it go.

Please Help.

Johnny.

OK, here's your answer:

This is what the Alpine needs to "see".
1. (+12v) on the footbrake wire
2. Grd signal on the handbrake
3. No signal on the handbrake
4. Grd signal on the handbrake (leave it now)
5. Remove (+12v) on the footbrake wire

The monitor will now come on.

This is how I hooked it up... and it works pretty well:
1. I hooked up the foot brake wire to the footbrake (+12v) switch as designed.
2. I hooked the handbrake wire to to a ground via a SPST switch. Leave switch in normally open (no grd) position.

When you want the monitor to go on, lightly step on the brake pedal and hold it there lightly as you flip the SPST switch on, off, and then on again. Release your foot from the brake pedal and the monitor will come on.

If you want the monitor off again quickly (suspicious car approaches from behind), just flip the SPST switch off (no grd).

Repeat sequence to turn it back on. All of this is a lot easier than it seems. Private me if you have any trouble.

kpond,

This is the same exact "by-pass switch" I have on my daily driver. It has an Alpine CVA-1005.

The problem with your solution is that on the NSX (or any model Honda/Acura equipped with ABS), this will trip the "easter egg" and disable both the TCS and ABS.

You know, the one-click-up handbrake secret?

I don't have ABS on my daily driver Honda Accord... so it works for me.

There has to be another way... and I'd like to know it as well.

Could someone explain to my why you would want a DVD player in your dash? I can see having one in a minivan for kids to watch cartoons, but an NSX? I don't get it.

Uhhhh... the solution I proposed will not trip anything - regardless of the type of car. The only thing that the car "sees" is momentary light braking (just enough to engage the brake lights). The Alpine is the only device that sees the ground signal from the switch I described which it assumes is the engagement of the handbrake.

What I said will work fine.

I was wondering the same thing.

Yea, I don't know about DVD. In my other vehicle, the kids and passenger like to watch but it IS a distraction for the driver. However, using the screen for NAV is awesome... but then again getting lost in an NSX isn't so bad either.

I can get the part that nyc nsx mentioned, we have them in stock for the alpine units, I do not know off the top of my head how much they are (I think 50 or 60 bucks). Not sure on hookup but my installers say they are cake, before these units came out we would hook up the alpine units the same way kpond suggested or we would make a box similar to the one they sell now by using relays and a timed latch relay, but now the best way is this box. email me at [email protected] if interested.
We sell Alpine, Eclipse, Sony and if their is anything I can get you, let me know. I have not taken apart my nsx yet (been an owner for about a month), but I have had to hide the keys from the installers as they want to tear it apart and see what they can do with it. In the old days I would have gutted the car the same day I bought it, we have won 3 world titles in IASCA (internation auto sound challenge association). My stores have grown and now home audio, home networking, multi room audio takes up most of my time, so I let the young bucks mess with the car audio gig.
If you leave and email give me awhile to reply because I usually dont get a chance to check emails until late at night.
Thanks Lynn Whitaker

hey lynn, glad to have you aboard. an NSX is certainly quite a change from the pontiac lemans you and kirk had six years ago

Well that is true, the nsx is a little different from the lemans, I think we wanted to start out with a piece of crap instead of a nice car, we did not know if we could make the car drive from the back seat, kirk used the car for deer hunting (honest, he would throw the deer on top after he made a kill)

Thanks to everyone for the help. I finally managed to get it hooked up after a few hours. I used 2 switches.

1. Hooked up one side of the switch to footbrake wire and the other end to +12v.

2. Hooked up the handbrake wire to one side of switch and the other end to ground.

To turn monitor on flip switch 1 to "on" then flip switch 2 to "on" (ground) then flip switch 1 "off"

This makes the monitor think the brake is being pressed, the handbrake is being pulled up, and then the brake is released.

I think I'll pick up one of these things Alpine make mentioned above to avoid having to mount and hide the switches.

As for the DVD in dash, this unit is MP3, Tuner, XM Radio, DVD, VCD, CD-R, CD-RW and ready all indash. I'll be putting in NAV later($3000.00 CDN) and the DVD is more for show purposes.

Thanks again for the help.

Johnny

One more thing to consider is that if you are ever in an accident that most insurance companies will find that the accident is YOUR FAULT, even if you are not the cause of the accident and will also DENY your claim. Read your insurance coverage VERY carefully BEFORE you do this. If you modify these units and you are in an accident the insurance company will check to make sure these are installed correctly before even evaluating your claim even if in some states regardless it may be legal.

If you think this is bad, consider that in europe (GERMANY) it is illegal to have food and drink in your car. Consider that most Porsche 911 cars did not have a cup holder for 25 years and not until the 996 did one finally appear from the factory. If you have a drink in the car and you are involved in an accident, the you are at fault immediately and insurance may not cover you. This includes rental cars, so be careful.

You serious? I go in Germany quite often and this is urban legend...
