i have an inconsistent problem with brake dust (or something like it).
a few months ago i noticed an over abundance of black material on the dishes of my rims. my first thought was brake dust, but it is more of a rubbery texture. thicker than typical brake dust. i thought i was rubbing and the inner fender liner was being rubbed off, but that wasn't the case. a few days later, it seemed to go away. about 5 months have passed and it never was that noticeable so i wrote it off. i let the car sit for a couple of weeks and when i took it out again, i experienced the same problem. in a major way. all wheels had this substance on them and it is not easy to remove. it's not just black dust/grime. it's physical pieces of a rubbery like substance. almost like a bunch of asphalt glued to the surface of the wheel dish. difficult to remove.

anything to be concerned with?

brake pads look fine.

The fact that this is occurring on all four wheels, I don't believe it is mechanical. A few things come to mind. I believe your tire compound is breaking down. This can occur under hard acceleration and cornering. The cause can be a bad compound lot, chemical reaction to street or garage floor surface chemicals. For example, the reason painted (house paint not epoxy) garage floors flake is because you drive your hot tires onto the floor and as it cools, it lifts the paint off the floor onto your tires. If the driving and parking surfaces are normal, I would believe the tire compound is breaking down as a result of a bad lot.

...another thought, as in my avatar, this will deposit rubbery substance particles like sticky dust; does another driver, like a teenager, have access to your car without your knowledge
