6 speed gear shifting - how good is it?

Hi all, I've been in a NSX only very briefly. I'm looking to get into a '97 + soon and is wondering how good is the 6 speed shifter.
First of all, is it SMOOTH? I've had driven many cars where the shifts are knotchy - especially 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st. How does the NSX 6speed compare to the S2000's? Are the gear ratios close and power available at pretty much every gear?

Also, how does the 6spd compare to the 5spd in pre '97s ? Smooth? Knotchy? Any issues with it or total satisfaction - please post here!

You would do well to search these forums. There are many threads on this subject, and countless opinions regarding your questions. I'll just say that driven properly they are both excellent transmissions but definitely very notchy until warmed up in colder climates (especially below freezing). I'll also tell you that the infamous "hole" between 1 and 2 on the 5-speed is not because you fall below the power band in second, it is because 2nd is such a tall gear. Those aren't necessarily the same thing. What you loose if gearing advantage (torque multiplication) not power output from the engine. Just keep that in mind as you read many posts to the contrary. That's not to say you won't want alternate gears, but it helps to understand the issues.

the throws are not as short i heard.

i use to own a 01 s2000, and i can tell you from experience that the s2000 has a very notchy feeling when you shift. my 99 nsx is sorta notchy too. but not as bad as the s2000.

I own a 94 5-speed, converted it to a stock 6-speed, then a bought a 6-speed with the 4:55 R&P and I've owned two 01 S2000s and currently have the 02 model.

Of the cars, the 6-speed in the 02 S2k is the best....shortest throws, most "feel" in the linkage, smooth, least effort, no grinding etc.

The next best, IMO is the stock 6-speed (4:06 R&P). Occassional grind when doing 1-2 at full throttle. Then the 6-speed with 4:55 R&P and the 01 s2k 6-speed. My least favorite is the 5-speed not because of the feel(it is smooth, if not smoother than the stock 6-speed) but because there is such a big drop in rpm between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd.
