Questions about Alpine 620 CD Changer

Hey Guys,

I recently bought, used, an Alpine 620 CD changer. It has not worked correctly since I got it. Basically it skips all the time.

I have cleaned it using the finest cleaning stuff out there (Maxell) and it still does not play properly. It is not the mounting since I was advised about that already, even with the car turned off, sitting in the garage it skips.

I have been told by some knowledgable people just to throw it away, "You were sold a piece of junk".

I contacted a repair center and they said " $150 to repair it." Heck, I paid $165 for it!! A new one 630 is available for $200!!

Just wondering if you guys had any additional insight into this.

At this point I feel like I have been ripped off.

If this is the case, that I was sold a bum unit, I will advise you to be cautious about this seller.

One more thing: Will the 630 just plug in??

Appreciate any advise.

Thnaks,
LarryB

LarryB,

It will plug in just like the 620 does. I have the 630 and all I needed to purchase was the PIE cable (I assume you have that)that crosses a couple of wires to make the sound "in phase".

The FAQ has more info on this.

John,

Thanks, I do have the adapter. I was also suppose to get that from the seller, but he never shipped it and I had to go get one on my own.

Appreciate the input.

Or, as I did, you just need to break open the connector and swap the two pins that need to be swapped. The adaptor is just a cross-over cable for these pins.

And easy way to save $20, an extra cable, and even a trip to the local audio store....

Larry - I know you said it's not the mounting, but I just want to make sure that the changer is set to the orientation in which you have it mounted.

In other words, if you have it mounted horizontally you need to set it one way, if you mounted it vertically (as with the OEM bracket) you need to set it another way. This makes a huge difference and is worth double-checking.

If it will not work even when you are sure it is set and oriented properly, I'd suggest giving the seller the chance to resolve the problem with you first.

Lud,

Thanks for the input. Initially I did have it set incorrectly, since the V/H adjustment was located under the brackets it came with, it was hidden.

One of the folks here helped me with that and I am sure it is set into the "vertical" position, as I have it mounted on the OEM bracket.

The acid test was to use the unit with the car off in the garage, that told me it was something with the unit.

The seller has not reponding to e-mails, especially when I asked about the adapter I was promised as part of the deal.

it sounds like the unit is bad from the beginning. I bought an used OEM changer from someone, it arrived with parts (screws, nuts) scattered in the box, and inside the changer itself. I was a bit worried, after I put everything together and install it into the car, it works just fine, which I was surprised for a 10+ year old unit. Got lucky I guess. I hope you paid by CC or some other means that you can recover your cost.

Larry, as your attorney I just wanted to remind you that I am here for you (as long as you help me install my seat cushion).

Hey Bob,

Thanks, but I surely hope is does not come to that over $165!! I have e-mail the seller again today requesting a refund and I will return the unit.

Let see what the response is.

Thanks,
LarryB

Just to make sure you did set both the adjustments to vertical correct.

Also what type of media are you using, some cd players have a difficulty playing CDR's. If you haven't already tried, try a original CD. Just a though to make sure you've tried everything.

Buy a Alpine 634 if you have to buy a new one.

nsxextreme,

You mentioned the 634. This is an Ai-Net unit. My car is a 1991 so I am thinking if I was to purchase that, it would require the Ai-Net to M-Bus cable. If so, do I also need the ACUALP cable too?
I have to tell you the 630 is down to $159, so I am leaning towards that. The ability to play MP3's has got me thinking though!

Appreciate your input.

Thanks,
LarryB
