Gentlemen,
I have a dilemma here. My engine is toast from a 5th to 2nd shift. My question, is it worth while to rebuild the engine or just buy a used one? I need input please, and how much is the cost between rebuild and used one

You might want to discuss this with Mark Basch, who has a shop in San Diego. Also with NSXprime member emvanderpol, who now has a used drivetrain in San Diego, as noted here.

Hard to say how much a rebuild would cost until it's completely apart to asses the damage. Best case is still pretty bad because it needs to be torn down so far to inspect, but if it's just a valve or two the rebuild option might be reasonable. If it did something like break off a valve head that then rattled around, or it broke a piston, then a used engine starts looking like a better deal.

How many NSX mechanics is out there know how to rebild an engine. I know that Mark Basch is one of them, who else, ACR Motor Sport?
NSXTACY, me and evanderpol did talk, and I am just trying to decide what is my best option. I might want to rebuild and throw on a blower insteat of running NO2. Just want to see whiach is more cost effective. What is Mark Basch,s number if anyone know. Thanks!

Deqle,

I thought your name/situation sounded familiar. So, what happened since this last thread?

Did you have the engine inspected? Were you still driving the car?

OK - I'm reading your original thread from September & now this one - at first glance seems same issue, but this one refers to 5-2 shift (original referenced 3-2 shift)
So don't tell me you did it again??!!

Based on previous description of what happened, the most likely issue is top end related - you need to get the heads off before determining whether it is more cost effective to repair or replace. If pistons survived with no damage, you are probably only looking at head repair.

Regardless, you don't mention anywhere miles on your car - if its a high mileage motor, a drop-in low mileage replacement might be a good solution.

Have you considered getting an automatic?

(sorry, couldn't resist the joke)

Another motor is in order. Mileage was 140,000 with modification. Just smoked a trams am with 75 shot nitrous when this happened. Guess it is about time. Next enigine, no more drag race. On the street, if the speed limit say 25mph, I am going 15mph. Done put $7,000 in the vehicle already in 4 months, just for clutches, and engine alone, time to take a break.
As far as getting a car with an auto go, ain't gonna happen, then I wouldn't think I get my money worth.
