96 problems?

I sold my 91 NSX in March and bought a Porsche. Realizing my mistake I have sold it and have located and will purchase a 96 NSX this week baring troubles.

I am wondering if there are any particular issues with a 96 different from a 91 I need to be aware of. I think I had every one of the known problems with the 91 hit me. I am thinking most of these, such as the AC compressor, ABS system, window lifts etc have been corrected and I am purchasing a more trouble free car. I am I correct or hopefull?

I think that's basically correct. No snap ring or window regulator issues.

You'll still have the occasional Bose problem, interior ventilator fan clogging, ABS noises, expensive air conditioning.

You should be able to pick up a 96 fairly reasonably, as 97s are more desirable.

You have pretty much nailed it. As a owner of a 96 you will be looking @ timing belt/water pump replacement regardless of miles as its suggested they be replaced in year 6 or 7 regardless of miles if the one your buying hasn't been done already. Mine will be going in for these items when the car is out of storage in the spring. May want to see if the valves have been adjusted as I think they need this as well dependent on miles? Havn't had any concerns w/the things mentioned in the second post however. I almost bought a Porsche as well so welcome back & Good luck.

Not to be a party pooper as I'm a proud and happy 96 owner but stock vs stock the 97 has significant improvements and the price point isnt too bad,5k$ more ,just a consideration.

I went the other way around....
I had a 96, sold it, got a 91.

I only had 1 problem with the 96. If you put pressure on the steering wheel while turning the ignition, the power steering will die. I believe the 97's had the same problem. Acura had an extended warrantee on the power steering ECU at the time... i don't know if it still applies. However, there is a good chance the previous owner already had the problem and had it updated.

Valve clearances are specified to be inspected and adjusted every 15K miles or every 12 months, whichever comes first.

While the '97 does have significant improvements, the difference in price is typically $8-10K.

The official maintenance schedule for valve inspection/adjustment intervals has changed over the years, with later years having longer intervals. For example for my '98 the specified schedule is every 30,000 miles or 24 months, and I think on the newer cars after the first one at 30k it may even jump to a larger interval for subsequent inspections.

Whether you want to follow this or not is up to you. I know some people with newer still cars follow the more frequent schedule.

Also, while the maintenance schedule lists everything by time/miles, I cannot think of any real reason to adjust valves based on time on a typical low-mile-per-year NSX. Valves do not come out of spec while the car is sitting unused in the garage.

Thanks for the input so far. I am not so concerned about the maintenance schedule stuff as that is part of ownership. The problem I mentioned with the AC is that the early cars did not have enough lubricant from the factory and the bearings went out unless corrected early. My 91 apparently was not and growled loud enough to make me change it. So I guess that is not a problem on the 96. I was really looking to find out about problems that are service bulletins or things you guys know as later model owners and I don't.

As I had the 91 2 years and am getting a second NSX I am thinking my user name, which is to mean new to NSX should be changed. I may be a freshman, but not new any longer I guess.

The warranty on the EPS (electric power steering) was extended to 8 yrs. It failed on my '96 and was repaired for free.
