Weird; I'll be watching this thread. I can't imagine what that is. Hopfully Larry B will answer. Good luck with this.
I recently pulled my car out of the garage and found this on the floor between the two rear tires and you can see the proximity to the RR tire. The spots on the ground are about 6" to 12" inches above the tireprints towards the front of the car. They had somewhat hardened and I was able to scrape them off the floor. Texture is tar-like and it looks sprayed or rapidly thrown to the ground (maybe when engine starts) in multiple directions, hence the little tadpole-like tails. A couple weeks later, it appeared again. Has anyone encountered this before? Thanks in advance.

does it have any smell? it looks like gunky glue
no odor![]()
This looks like the same goo that leaks out on the engine block. You can only see it when you remove the timing belt covers. There has been a post that had pictures of this and it was determined that it was nothing to worry about because it was normal to these cars and had no detrimental effects. I'll try and find the post and copy it to this thread.
I believe the drops come from cam sesnor.
I think there have been some threads over the years, and since I've had the occasional drop since at least 2005, it is fairly normal.

Did this come off the your NSX? I seen something similar to this before from my other car. On mine, it was the under body protection stuff that will come off over time when contaminated with oil. Don't know if yours is the same as what I had. I had a gasket leak from my oil pan which leaked some oil onto the under side of the car. Over time, I saw these tadpole things on the driveway. Fixed the gasket, and steam cleaned the under side. The tadpoles went away.
Remember that a successful marriage depends on two things:
1) finding the right person and
2) being the right person.
Thanks for sharing and yes it's from the NSX. The above referenced link seems to indicate that the issue is really a non-issue, or so I hope.
Still wondering about one thing, you'd think a leak would drip down yet the spots in the pics in both links have multi-directional thrown drops...what's doing the throwing?
it seems like it dripped on something that was spining fast to cause the tadpole like goo. it kinda looks like when my cv joint split on my other car and sprayed goo every where. really weird though.

My car does this. I asked my mechanic and he said not to worry about until there's some other reason to take (whatever is causing this) apart.

Same here--I 've found those little tadpoles under my '92 from time to time. It's definitely not oil. I need to scrap them off of my garage floor with a razor blade. It seems like some kind of sealant.
Hey guys!
I figure I would jump in here to help identify the tar like goo you guys have been finding. I am pretty sure that this is from the Crank Position Sensor. After working back an forth with Steve Gooding here in NC (NSX Cert Mechanic) he hit the nail on the head.
So ... here is how this happens and I will post some pictures to show you. The CPS sensor is located behind the Cam Gears on the front Head. Very hard to see, but you can kind of see the sensor when you do a timing belt change.
This sensor heats up and over time the Black Goo you are finding runs down the front engine plate whihch is covered by the timing belt cover. When you remove the front TB cover it will looks like this ...
Then as the sensor gets older and heats up or gets really hot ... the "Black Goo" epoxy continues to melt and seep out from the sensor. It eventually runs all the way down to the botoom of the engine and out by the Harm Balenecer, it will exit and the syntrifical rotation of the pulley will send it in all directions causing the tails you are seing all over. When it dries, it's hard as a rock.
Eventualy your CPS sensor will look like this;
and then the wires etc. will burn up and heat will cause the CPS electical to be off it's normal resistances and you will get a CEL with a P0335 code. Funny part is ... under a cold conditions, the CPS resistances rear normal. Take the car out for a ride, get it hot and shut it off ... then take the resistances ...they are way off. This is what continues to throw a P0335 code that you cannot get ride of.
Here is a pcitures of the NEW CPS (Top) and the OLD CPS Bottom side be side. Myself and Steve were amaized that the sensor even worked!
You guessed it ... all the "Black Goo" was completely gone and had ran down the front engine cover and on the floor or road. The only trail left was on the front of my engine cover. This would only drip of melt after long drives when the enginer was really hot.
I hope this explanation helps explaine the "Black Goo" Mystery. I just replaced this sensor a few weeks ago.

xory72, thanks for the pics. All of them are leaking, some more, some less. But I haven't read anything about a complete failure of the CPS here on prime. So no worry.![]()
goldNSX,
Your welcome. Yes, I agree all of them are leaking, I have not seen anywhere on Pricme where a CPS has failed. So to find this on my car was a little bit of a surprise.
I just thought I would share what I found with others. I originally thought I was off one tooth with the tining belt, but after taking it all apart for a second time, I check the Crank Position Sensor ... and the above post is what I found.

These are great pics, thanks! I was surprised and worried myself until LarryB confirmed that being normal and no problem.![]()
