    EPS question

    Hi all,

Now mods will you please excuse me if this isn't seen as being in the right section, but I honestly thought about which section it should be posted in, but couldn't really decide.......

Is it electronic as it's Electronic power steering ? Is it do it yourself because I am doing it myself ?? It just didn't nessecarily seem to fit since I don't know the answer to my own post (that would be madness )

So anyhow, we're in the process of stripping down my car to be a dedicated race car and we had intended to pull all of the wiring forward of the drivers seat and re-do only what was needed as there's a heap in there, and then I realised that we hadn't taken the EPS into consideration.

I mean I realise it'll need power, but wasn't sure if the EPS worked literally as a standalone assist to the mechanical side and got it signals from the rack itself, or if it has a seperate ECU or some signal from the main ECU it uses to make decisions.

So in short, I'm just wondering if anyone out there has direct experience with EPS steering rack setups and can tell me what we need to keep to have it function correctly with our replacement engine ECU.

We've found ECU's for aircon, TCS, ABS etc etc but nothing that seemed to be specific to the EPS.

Any help, as always is very much appreciated.

    Re: EPS question

If you're making a dedicated track car sell your EPS unit for big money (about $500-$600) and find a manual steering rack from some early car. No need to have that much weight for something that I understand only helps while slowly moving.

To answer part of your question there is a EPS computer behind the subwoofer on the passenger floor.

    Re: EPS question

These cars are pretty rare here and I recently enquired about a new rack and was quoted $ 11,500 NZD for a new one from Honda, that's over $ 8000 USD so it's simply not worth changing the rack so I need to either get it going or just leave it disconnected, but I'd rather have it working if it's not too hard.

Do you have any photos of what it looks like so we can determine which one of the 8 I think we have !!

Also, do you know how it works ??? IE does it get a speed signal from the main ECU to tell it when to do it's thing ? or does it work some other way ?

    Thanks for your post though.

    Re: EPS question

Thanks for your reply, but 2 issues really.

    1. There's nothing wrong with my rack other than the fact that I would ideally want to get the EPS working again and so we need to understand what it's looking for regarding inputs.

    2. I'm based in NZ, so we're RHD so I'm assuming any rack from the USA is of no use to me really.....

Thanks anyhow, but I was really looking for more technical understanding / information about how the EPS works than I was a replacement part.

    G'day Fraser
Not 100% but i'm under the impression the Power Steering rack only has assistance under 25mph then it's turned off. So one would assume it has a speed input/switch from the ECU.

    Kiwis don't do wiki?

Unless you are racing in a sub 25mph class it won't be kicking in anyway. Why not gut the wires, sell the ECU, and pull out the bulb for the warning light (assuming you are using stock dash & instruments)?

    Re: EPS question

Thanks TyraNSX........ feel like a bit of a dork now........ clearly kiwi's don't do WIKI's !! LOL

    That's quite helpful.

The main reason I thought it would be helpful is that since we're running 245 wide front slicks is that it would be helpful when manouvering around the pit area. Our tracks aren't very big relative to US tracks and pit area's are a bit tight so although it wasn't critical, it would have been helpful.

We'll give it a go and see if we can get it going....... if not we'll just do as you suggest and scrap it completely. We're running a Racepak dash so we won't have any issues with lights and not running factory ECU either so it shouldn't effect any other systems.

I have a factory workshop manual and wiring diagram, but it's a bit vague when it comes to labels on wires coming to the EPS plug. Another Prime member who repairs theses isn't even sure if the signals are coming to or going from the plugs as some go to the Auto box...... I'm hoping probably outbound signals to the box......

I'll let you know how we go.
