Hi All,

We're a UK based Honda performance company and we also run the Honda Vtec Challenge Race series here in the UK (www.vtecchallenge.co.uk). We've currently be running a K20 EG civic which has done very well (won the class in 2011) but thought it time to up the game a bit so we picked up a 1999 NA2 (prefacelift) with some very light panel damage to turn into a race car. Be good promotion for our series

Plans are flexible but we want to strip it back to the bare minimum and replace with race parts where possible (mainly for reliability and cost reasons) - when OEM parts in the UK cost more than custom/race parts its a no brainer.

Anyway we made a start this week.

First stage was to strip the car pretty much bare. First phase of this is done - all the interior electrics & loom, interior and most of the underbonnet gubbins.

Its been fascinating job as you get to see how they put it together. What is surprising though is all the effort they went into building a lightweight chassis and body only to then fill it with very heavy stuff! But then I suppose thats what the NSX-R was about.

For example, we weighed a few items that seemed a bit excessive.

Interior/front harness inlcuding all control boxes, ECU etc 25kgs
Steering column 11kgs
Twin aircon rads with cowling and fans 8kgs
Front bumper inc lights 12kgs

Anyway some pics:

If your goal was to reduce weight, I think you went slightly overboard.

Seriously, what are your weight and power goals?

lol, get out as much of the heavy stuff they put in there as possible. Weight goal 1050kgs. Power 330bhp NA (fairly stock)

Engine loom and ancillary loom will be remade with Type44 using Motec or Racepak PDM for power distribution. ECU Euro4.

Custom steering rack with custom column with DC power assist.

I'm looking forward to see this build progress.

I also race a K20 engined Civic EG [ mine's black, like my NSX ] here in Australia, and have been dreaming of doing an NSX track car next time I come across a cheapish NSX, but I'm spending too much money on the EG race car at the moment.

interesting, keep us updated. I think there was a guy down in Australia doing something similar

Well folks, its been a while but there has been quite a bit of progress. Main delay has been the bodyshop who had the shell for a year lol

Wow, looks great. Amazing transformation so far.

That looks beautiful. Did you guys end up doing an acid bath to get all of the sound insulation/tar off the car?

No acid bath (not great on Ally) just sodablasted main sections

Interior sound deadening was removed by hand and help of dry ice

Yes rack was custom made and with shorter ratio - 2.6 off the top of my head (it was a while ago!). Using a powered column for assistance.

It bolts into the existing position on the existing brackets (with two custom brackets on the rack). About 20mm offset spindle but I'm using a custom column as well so not an issue.

Please tell us more about the steering rack. Is it custom made? Did you guys increase the steering ratio? Fits like oem?

I've wanted to do this for many years. Can you share approx how much something like this costs?

Interested to hear about the steering rack I'm RHD.
Good luck with the project it's been 3 years!
