Before you do anything do a GooglePatents search. 95% of the time there is almost always an existing patent out there, no matter how unique you think your idea might be.
Anyone go through the Patent experience online or use an attorney?
Interested in hearing about your experience and costs.

If it is a unique idea you can file a provisional patent yourself(been reading up on this myself) for a modest fee($125 for small entity and less than 100 pages I think) before needing to file for an official patent. That way you at least have it in the pipeline in case someone tries to patent the same idea. I think it gives you 12 months to file for an official patent.

Success is not about where you live, but about how far you've come.
