VIN Etching: I have a new interior rocker plate cover, can I get the VIN put in it?

I just bought a 2000 NSX. It did have a door impact and the door was replaced. It also had some damage to the rocker panel. All is repaired and it's basically 100% (actually there is one small thing I need to iron out) but the question is:

I have a new rocker plate interior panel where the VIN for the car is etched in metal which is attached the the plastic. Can I get a VIN put in there? How would one go about that?

It doesn't look stamped. I don't know what the original one looked like but it would have been nice to have kept that plate (I'm optimistically assuming the damage was not that severe to actually impact the plate). I know we have a laser etch at work but I've never seen it used. Not sure it will be nice enough. Blank looks mighty suspect (as it should in this case...).

I searched but didn't find anything on this. Any input would be appreciated.

If you already have the new OEM blank sill plate you can get it engraved. You'll need to find someone that can replicate the OEM as best you can.

Something like this but its an NSX-R plate.

Thanks, I will check with SOS. Blank simply won't do...

The purpose of the etchings are to show that they are original. It might be illegal to etch a vin number on a new panel. Getting the vin etched would seem an attempt to cover up damaged parts.

Understood and agreed. I'm not etching a body panel. I'm etching the interior decorative floor plate. The accident is documented through car fax so it's not hidden.

All that said, not sure if this part would fall into that category. I agree with the intent of etching in general but I am guessing this interior piece is outside of that realm. Especially since you get get replacement ones with etching.

Point take either way. No intent to decieve (or break the law).

Is the entire VIN etched on the plate?

I believe so. I would need to double check but I'm pretty sure it's the full VIN.

My '91 doesn't have the full VIN there. Only the serial number which is the last portion of the VIN: "MT001399".

So you may be correct. The would remove the legality issue out.

The best option is to buy a new sill plate with a blank space where VIN # goes and bring it to trophy shop and have them etch or engrave a super ultra thin plate thats cut perfectly into the VIN spot. Bring the opposite side good sill plate as an example of the font. Use super glue.
    ??? Give it a try.

Re: VIN Etching: I have a new interior rocker plate cover, can I get the VIN put in

you said you only need one Vin etched into the sill plate.

so your other side should still be there. take both to a trophy shop and have them copy it from the other door.

inless both your doors need this done.

and no it not illegal to have this done, since your not frauding anyone,
its only a partial vin, example: MT000100 thats on the doors sills.

    good luck
