Rear-ended

Got a police report, filed a claim, waiting for a call back from the insurance...

SO in the mean time, what are my options? Obviously I want the car to be repaired by a shop with NSX experience. Any hope of convincing the insurance that their usual places won't do?

And, if I have the option, where should I push for? Cologne Auto Body in Belmont?

What do you mean their usual place?

You have the choice to take your car wherever you want to...
However that doesn't mean they will pay the repair shop whatever they ask for.
Remember that the people who work for insurance companies can smell a ridiculous overcharge from a mile away.....with the said, you should be able to go to whomever you want.
Do what has always been the rule of thumb...go get 3-5 estimates...from the highest and best shop in town to the one that are average. Send those to your claim representative and they will work with getting a good number for you to get your car fixed

Any recommendations for Bay Area shops to get estimates from, then?

Do you have any pictures that you can post or feel comfortable posting?

I took plenty of pictures but not sure it would be a good idea to post them just yet... Waiting for the insurance to get back to me.

So sorry, worry about that every time some loser races up behind me. Hope all goes well with the repairs. -b

+1. Go Brooks. Brooks was the sponsor for NSX events, and they are good at aluminum chassis repair. What happend to the rear-ended?

Great. If I can talk the insurance into it I totally will.

I actually got rear-ended by an S2000. I definitely need a new rear valence and a new exhaust (one of the tips is totally crushed), and probably a new rear bumper.

The exhaust looks like it took a fair bit of impact so I hope it didn't bend anything else in there out of shape.

Whoa, you've been having a string of bad luck lately. :frown:

You can take your car to any body shop you want and you can demand OEM parts. Hopefully your insurance company won't give you too much trouble about it. Some of smaller insurance companies will nickle and dime you, but if you have AAA or Allstate you should have no issue.

Look on the bright side, you'll get a free 02' rear valence upgrade (if thats what your going for) and you could talk them into getting an aftermarket exhaust. OEM one retails for $1163 so you have alot of options for exhaust.

I am so sorry to hear about this, Ben. :(

If the damage is significant, don't forget about diminished value. Here are a few links I found via Google. Lots of reading out there.

Again, so sorry to hear about this incident. I hope the repair is done quickly and properly.

I was wondering about that... I assume the 91-01 rear valence is out of production so they would end up ordering the 02+ anyway? In that case I know of one that's already painted Midnight Pearl that I could buy.

As for the exhaust, I assume if I wanted anything other than OEM I would have to order it and bring it to the shop and have the insurance reimburse me later. Are there any exhausts to consider under $1163? The two I was looking at, Prospeed and AP-X, are both more than that.

Geez Ben, you just can't catch a break...

Seriously. At this rate it's going to take a year or two to get the car "just right"... And that's if I don't hit any more snags.

Thanks. Yeah, this sucks. Thanks for the links. The damage *LOOKS* fairly topical so hopefully with a proper repair the car will lose little if any value. But of course, I won't know until it's been inspected by a professional.

Waiting for a call from the insurance...

 were you making a video? was the little brother trying to prove something or vice versa?

Sadly not. We were sitting still and an older guy slammed into us going uphill. Still not sure how...

The cop taking the police report said the same thing. "When I first heard an S2000 hit an NSX I figured you guys were racing, but you don't really fit the profile..."

Hmm, how do I prove diminished value? Do I basically have to roll into an Acura dealer and ask how much he would give me for it as a trade-in with and without accident history?

I got rear ended while sitting still at a light last year. Minor damage but killed my oem wing.
If Brook is the place, you should talk to them before you take your car and make sure they are willing to go to bat for you and deal with the insurance on your behalf. I met the Statefarm adjuster at DownForce and his est. was based on the minimal industry standard repair which did not agree with DownForce more detail, proper repair that will last a long time. My est. was just over $2k doing the quick and dirty job and Sean@DownForce was able to "explain" to the adjuster how he would repair the car properly and DF won their justification at a much higher amount. This is the easy part. Now the DV claim.

I am also going down the path of a DV claim and it basically involve the Small Claim court unless the insurance company willing to pay which they won't. By law, you are entitle to a DV value and I used Autoloss.com to begin my process and their fee is $200 to get an detail est. of the post-accident value of your car.
Of course StateFarm wasn't willing to pay after few exchanges of letters. I got my est. at CarMax for free. Make an appointment and say you want to trade in your car and see how much its worth. I took it to a Acura dealership but they won't do it since my car is not oem and they don;t know the value of all the mod parts. My DV est. is $6k so I am taking them to court. Even if I win my case in court in Oct., to collect will be another battle.

Thanks for your advice. I'll definitely run the official estimate by some trustworthy NSX guys (in this case Jim Russell) to see if I need to argue for more.

This is invaluable info. Thanks for sharing liftnot, and please keep us posted as I'm sure it will help other members in the future. Good luck with your DV case!

Well, the car is with Jim now, getting torn apart to find all the damage.

On the plus side it looks like I'll come out of this with an 02 rear valence and a CompTech exhaust on the insurance's dime (I was able to source both cheaper than OEM).

On the downside, sounds like proving that the value has diminished is going to be an uphill battle.

if insurance is paying for it. go to brooks in oakland like everyone says. visit their shop and you will see why, there isnt even any dust from sanding inside the shop.
