I know there was a thread about oil filters before but I never saw this particular one taken apart. This was on my car for approx. 3000 miles.
A couple of observations:
1. The steel shell is strong. It takes quite a bit of force to squeeze it out of round even though the end is removed. I don't have a micrometer so I can't take a measurement of the thickness but it is substantial.
2. I counted 60 pleats of the filter. Not sure if there is a number that is optimal?
3. The filter element seemed to be in good condition after 3000 miles. I could not detect any deterioration. Even when poking at it wet with oil, it still is quite rigid.
BTW this is the filter: http://napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=ATM3612905_0257798644
