Thread: Clunking sound from rear-offside?

    Question Clunking sound from rear-offside?

Out of the blue,my 91 NSX developed a rumbling,mechanical-sounding clunking-type noise, just yesterday. It seemed to be coming from the passenger side rear and is only noticable at very low speeds, around 2-15 mph and at cold start it isn`t there;once I`ve warmed the car up it begins. At speed there is nothing. At first I thought it was some loose items in the trunk, but it isn`t.Wierder yet is that on my drive home this evening,it didn't occur!Got a feeling it`ll be there again tomorrow though. It wasn`t a LOUD noise but certainly wasn`t right.Anyone have any ideas as to what the possible problem might be?Car was very recently serviced at 62K at Accura dealer and has been running like a dream....Thanks to all in advance and I`ll let you know what transpires.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the wheel hubs.

I had the same problem. It was my left wheel hub. $1000 later it's gone.

There are two possible axle problems.

One is the axle nut. This is a nut in the center of the rear wheel. There's a bend in the outer part that mates with the notch in the inner part. If they don't match up, you may need a new axle nut.

The other is that it's possible for the axle to snap (break). If this happens, your car's handling will be affected to an extreme. It will feel like the wheel is VERY loose, because it's only held on by the fact that the rotor fits inside the brake caliper. I had this happen on my non-NSX car, and saw it happen to an NSX this past weekend.

If you had a broken axle, you would know that something is drastically wrong.

Thanks to all that have been kind enough to offer some feedback. Two days on from the noise "appearing",it has decided to go on vaccation-hopefully for good! There has been absolutly no re-occurence of the sounds which is just as annoying now because each time I take the car out I`m half expecting to hear it at any time...but for now,it`s just not there!
Now....how the HELL do you guys figure this?

Check the hubs, and the calipers, easily done by yourself

    Question

Well....here`s the update....nothing like the noises I first reported have re-appeared.I do hear a creak when I hit the brakes firmly just as I roll slowly up to a halt, but nothing too worrying...sounds like the suspension needs a lube,if you know what I mean?Otherwise the really worring noise has gone.Should I ask the Accura dealership to check it out or some regular Honda shop?

A trip back to the dealer after some major maintenance is never a bad idea. Explain what you are experienceing and have them check it out. My local Acura dealer is very intrested in customer satifaction and I hope yours is too. My NSX has some strange un-explained sounds most of which are normal but I hear then because I don't drive the car every day. The NSX is amazinglly quiet and refined considering you are nearly sitting on top of the engine and drive line. When I bought my car I had a rumble/howl at 60 mph, thought I had a bad rear wheel bearing but after replacing the worn out front tires and an alinement the noise is gone.
