DIY: Radar Detector Hardwire Installation into Acura NSX-T

A great high end choice is the Escort Passport 8500, under $200, great range, minimal false alarms, doesn't break the bank. I have four of them now, one for each car. I had an older V1 and it became unusable recently with false alarms from other vehicle's vehicle sensors I think - I sent it back, they said it was fine so flipped it on eBay.

Agree with JohnWayne: buy a good brand and you can always flip it for a good price. Don't buy an older used 8500 though, they have issues with the boards in high heat (like here in Florida) - "Service required" on the display. There is a way to tell from the serial number how old it is (easy to figure out, WWYY, i.e. 3414 = week 34, 2014) and there are a couple of extra letters that tell you if it is a new style board or not.

Definitely don't rely on Waze - you are at the mercy of other folk reporting in. I can't stand Waze - "vehicle parked on the shoulder ahead", "object on road", etc. I only use it when travelling to/from the airport to make sure there are no wrecks on the way.

Would you recommend:

[h=1]Escort Passport 8500X50 Black Radar Detector, Red Display[/h][h=1]Escort Direct Wire SmartCord (Red Light)[/h]
I can get them both on Amazon for $225 New. The smart cord says it will plug into my fuse box (I have a 1991).

Let me know your thoughts. I am not a real speeder but I would feel better having some protection.

Also any advice on wiring would be appreciated. I hate a detector in the center of the windshield. I was going to hardwire the detector and mount it on the lower left corner of my windshield for the least distraction. The cable looks very cool. I guess I could mount the control module on within easy reach.<script type="text/javascript" src="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/18730887/background/helpers/prefilterHelper.js"></script>

I use a smart cord direct wire. I have installed it as per this thread.. I have used it that way for years.

Thanks

I will get them and work through the install. Was there anything different about the install in your car than in the 02? I have already wired the radio, cigarette lighter, etc but want to use the fuse box for the Radar Detector. I don't want to take the console apart if I can avoid it. It is a real pain since I installed the cupholders and cigarette lighter in my armrest.

The install went great. Once I figured out the fuse box it was easy. On my 91 there is no ground wire for the accessory connection to the fuse box. I used the bolt that went into the chasis as a ground. This was the nut right below the fuse box. It was a pain to get out but it worked great. I remain amazed at how well this car was engineered.

Thank you for the great advice. That coupled with the service manual made the job rather straight forward. The hardwire connection for the 8500 was great. The remote mute switch looks very cool. I mounted it right by the ignition key on the right side. Looks great!<script type="text/javascript" src="safari-extension://com.ebay.safari.myebaymanager-QYHMMGCMJR/423ad011/background/helpers/prefilterHelper.js"></script>

That's really not the ideal position for the detector. It needs to be level and mounted squarely with the road. It looks like you have it pointed down and to the left.

Is this promo still going on for members?

i need a few V1 mounts for several cars, as well as GoPro

Best spot I found was top of the windshield above the rear view mirror. I have been using the passport 9500ix for a couple of years and it's the best detector I've ever had.

Hi Primers..

I just got my hardwire kit and asking for assistance on how to wire this up. Would be nice if someone can post photos because learning from reading what people here wrote is a bit difficult. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
