The "J" Swap

Wow, I know you're making this swap for your self. But I wanted to thank you for keeping a very tight thread photos and all.
By putting a kit together for sale, you seriously will be helping track rats like my self, since we are so exposed to loosing engines more often LOL.

Here is another axle bracket, this time I found a good welder! The parts were cut out by water jet, then machined and finally welded. I am going to see about getting this made as one solid billet piece.

The J32 is in, for now at least!

I know it will come out again, but now I can get the passenger mount built. Note: it will not look like my original design due to the mounting constraints, but I think it will be stronger. It will look like the one that Rouge Motorsports built. I will also fit the exhaust and A/C lines.

The passenger side clearance might be a little bit tighter than with the C30

I had the SOS oil pressure gauge sending unit relocation kit on the C30 and so I mounted it down by the oil filter and tapped oil pressure from the oil pressure light sending unit with a 1/8” BSP T-fitting and a 1/8” BSP to NPT adapter for the SOS sending unit. If used the stock NSX oil pressure gauge sending unit, I may have been able to just use the T-fitting.

Great work!!! I think a lot of people who have negative views of this for even valid reasons need to think of it being for a salvage NSX with blown motor. Then this swap totally is worth it and easy to fit turbos AND if he offers the brackets as a kit and a wiring diagram/routing...not to hard.
 
The J32 engine he is putting in already has more power and torque than an NSX engine. If all goes well, the "kit" from this thread can probably be applied to a J36 engine which is rumored to put out over 300whp and 300tq NA.

Any idea how they compare in weight?

Great work!!! I think a lot of people who have negative views of this for even valid reasons need to think of it being for a salvage NSX with blown motor. Then this swap totally is worth it and easy to fit turbos AND if he offers the brackets as a kit and a wiring diagram/routing...not to hard.

I haven't heard from too many people with negative views, however I will admit it is not for everyone but for some it really makes sense. Although my car has a salvage title I am strictly adhering to my policy of "no modifications to the NSX", so this swap or "mod" isn't much different from all the other mods put on cars and I wouldn't hesitate doing this swap with a clean title NSX.

That looks about right for weight from what I recall. Conservatively, I would say easily a 100 lb weight savings. Think of all the things people do to save weight and add power.

So, I had to move the oil pressure gauge sending unit already, turns out the axle probably would have hit it. I found a much better location up on the valve cover.

I was planning on using the factory J32 exhaust pipe from the manifolds for initial start-up but the factory pipe wouldn’t fit with the new axle bracket. So, I will be making the custom connector pipes sooner rather than later. Here is the front J32 pipe connected to the front NSX pipe. I will use this for initial start-up, but then I will take this "template" to the exhaust shop and have one made.

I was able to reroute the accelerator cable from the passenger side to the driver side through an existing grommet in the firewall. It connects up to the J32 throttle body, but I will need an adapter/spacer bracket to move it out and away from the throttle body about an inch.

Here are the coolant hose adapters to convert between the NSX chassis and J32 engine. One for each radiator hose and one for the heater hose.

The passenger side motor mount adapter bracket looked like a no brainer at first because I could line up either one of the holes in the NSX mount with the J32 block, but then I realized that the engine is canting 5 degrees to the back, so the J32 engine mount surface and the NSX passenger mount are not parallel.

So, I have come up with an adapter bracket that bolts to the J32 block and is canted 5 degrees so the NSX mount can bolt up.

This is the greatest build thread ever!! What an inspiration! Especially for those who have gone through a set of head gaskets on the pesky C30. I wish you were closer to NY so I could watch and help out with the build, drinks on me! Please do make a startup/running video of this bad boy! This is NSX pioneering at its best, folks! A true first!

One step forward and two steps back.

I finished mocking up the exhaust and it is being built. The cooling lines, vacuum lines and fuel lines are all fitted.

I built a mockup of the revised passenger side motor mount adapter bracket and took it to the machinist and he said he could build it, however it seemed overly complicated and he asked if I could simplify it to save some machining costs.

470whp on a $2000 engine I am game all day everyday = ). I will happily sell my CTSC 3.2 for this swap. I would rather embarrass a C6 Z06 then rev to 9k ; P best part is if I blow engine a simple call to my importer and will have a fresh 50k mile engine with in a week. not a $10k rebuild. Given this will be a turn key upgrade when you are done. 100% serious.
 
Damn this really makes the excuse for a mint early bodied specimen sans engine a very viable temptation.
 
Definitely has some potential for some cheaper builds for the NSX. A 2500lb NSX with better weight distribution, similar V6 grunt and a turbo is indeed worthy of a look. Looks great on paper in fact, curious to see how it will turn out as far as ownership experience and how those perceived benefits will translate. Glad to see this happening!
 
You know David, help/ free labor is just one post away. Just put down that you're doing a BBQ and to remember to bring mechanic gloves lol. A few days heads up should be sufficient. Need to see this running!

Thanks Marc, I know. Planning the time is the tough part for me. I usually work on the car during the week during the day when the house is quiet. Most evenings and weekend are filled with family time. Although, I have been getting in some weekends lately, because everybody in the family knows how bad I want this done. I will try and schedule a BBQ day soon.

I am familiar with the J36, however I don't think I will go past the 93mm stroke of the J35, but who knows. I can tell you, that as soon as this is running, I will probably pick up a J35A3 from an 01-02 Acura MDX.

Ok, I’m down to the wire, literally, the engine is back out and I just have a little wiring to finish up. The passenger side motor mount and throttle bracket extension CAD files have been sent off to the machinist. Hopefully I will get a quick turnaround on those. Regardless, I will be able to get the engine back in when the wiring is done.

I built a mockup of the ECU/PCM mount and bolted the ECU to it. I cut the original mounting tabs off of the J32 ECU, and then bolted it to the board with longer rear cover plate screws. I may just use this mockup board in production, at least temporarily. It is pretty solid and this PVC foam board material may cut down on vibrations to the ECU.
