ABS Upgrade

I should have never sold it to XRC then my second change was buying back from him But at the same exact time I was gonna buy it back, RYU texts me looking for one and I said hell let RYU buy it back from XRC LOL im a dummy

I kick myself in the azz everyday for this one LOL

I did the ABS upgrade four years ago.... You're gonna LOVE it!

harness too?

slow down! You're beating me. (I've had mine sitting on the shelf for nearly a year now)

I have the harness from KSP Engineering in Japan. You're going to geek out on this project- full brake overhaul. New master cylinder, totally disassembled and refinished (media blasted, painted and baked) calipers and ABS upgrade. Since I decided to keep my NSX and not buy the new one, I am investing the money in making my car like new. This year is the brake system. Next year will be fuel system (pump, filter and all lines). After that, all rubber suspension bushings replaced hopefully with help from Ti Dave.

I will be doing a full article for the DIY with pics and maybe videos. No cheaper solution- believe me I looked. The NSX ABS has the brake balance and tuning in the digital computer mounted to the modulator. Unless you have a code writer that can crack and re-write the software, using any other ABS modulator will give you incorrect inputs and potentially dangerous/deadly consequences. Also, the SOS kit already is considerably cheaper than buying through the dealer. They found a good source for the units in Japan. Also, I hear the NA2 R ABS is a hot setup. According to Kaz, it is much less intrusive and really lets you go in deep before kicking in- pucker factor of about 9.5 :D

I have done the upgrade 2 years ago and love apart from the weight soooo much better on track, what is the KSP harness you are talking about?

KSP Engineering is a company in Japan that specializes in the NSX and other exotics. They make many aftermarket parts for our car, including this ABS change harness. I chose the KSP harness for two reasons. First and foremost, it uses crimped connectors instead of solder, just like OEM. Because my NSX is my daily car and I drive in winter, durability in all conditions is critical for me, especially for a safety item like ABS. Second, KSP built the harness in two sections, which makes passing it through the firewall much easier.

Hi Honcho,

can you source one for me?? it's the only thing i miss to do the upgrade...
(i had one, but loaned it to a us guy for copy and never heard back....)

Thanks,
Nuno

Nuno I would contact Kaz and buy directly from him. He modifies the KSP harness to include the SCS terminal, which permits quick problem code checking. My KSP does not have this and I am kicking myself, since any time I get an ABS light, I am going to have to chase it down by testing all the leads. :)

Part 1 - SOS 2000+ ABS Update with KSP Harness

The following is my process installing the SOS ABS upgrade using the harness from KSP Engineering in Japan. Special thanks to Warren W for his very helpful write-up and Kaz of NSXCB for invaluable assistance with the KSP unit.

Tools I found useful:

10 mm Flare Nut Wrench
Vise-Grips
Lots of shop rags
Work Light
3, 6 and 12 inch 3/8 ratchet extensions
Small and Large Black Zip-Ties
1/2" driver breaker bar

Step 1: Depressurize old ABS system by either using T-handle tool on the bleed screw or manually opening one of the solenoids with your "exercise kit" like I did. USE CAUTION. That brake fluid is pressurized at 5,000 psi. It will foam the reservoir and come out fast. I held a rag over the reservoir to contain any spillage. Drain out the rest of the brake fluid using whatever method you like.

Step 2: Disconnect and drain brake lines at the wheels. Because I was also rebuilding my calipers, I just removed them from the car and allowed the lines to gravity-drain into some used tin cans from my recycle bin. This became a great decision because it really limited the amount of brake fluid spill when tackling the modulator. Space is tight in there and brake fluid eats paint. This step limits that risk.

Step 2a(optional): Remove master cylinder. This really frees up access, but is optional. I also was changing my master cylinder, so it made sense for me.

Looks like we caught it just in time. This master cylinder is 23 years old with 92,XXX miles. The rust is not from the cylinder, but the brake booster. It indicates brake fluid was leaking past the piston seal, ate the paint off of the booster and started to rust it. Yours probably looks the same, or worse.

Step 2: Remove cruise control unit and rest it on the hood garnish.

Step 3: Remove battery, battery box, spare tire/bracket, relay sub harness and heater blower unit (only 4 bolts!)

Step 4: Unplug all electrical connectors from the old ABS unit and disconnect the front and rear brake lines. Undo the three large bolts holding the unit to the NSX chassis and lift the unit out as an assembly. Some jostling/tilting is necessary to clear all of the loose lines and connections. You probably will scratch your paint like I did below. That's ok- your NSX is aluminum and won't rust. Still, I hit that area with the same Krylon flat black paint I used to patch up the brake booster.

More to come...

Honcho, do you have a more detailed write-up of the KSP harness install? The shop working on my car is having difficulty completing the work. Attached are the 3 they do not know what to do with.

ABS Definitive List

I've searched all over and was not able to find a definitive parts list for the upgrade. SOS and Marc sell the "kit" but not clear what is in it. Is the below the complete list? Assume I am replacing both front brake lines (they have to come out for paint anyway).
