Brake lights randomly turning on

My brake lights have been turning on and staying on when I'm not even using the brakes. Any idea what could cause this? Its dangerous and I have had nothing but issues with my brake lights

Do they ever turn off?

Sounds like the classic plastic tab at the top of the brake pedal. It deteriorates, and when it's not there the lights come on (when the brakes are not being used, in the full up position, the tab pushes on a plunger that keeps the lights off; when brakes are applied the pedal moves away from the tab turning on the switch for the lights).

There are numerous threads about this here on Prime. < $5 part, and if I remember correctly, a PITA to get to it to replace.

I actually replaced it and was $4 and some change off eBay. It was the little plug piece. Hardest part was just getting it to click into place
