California highway 95 south from Vegas to highway 10

I am thinking of driving through the desert via California highway 95 south from Vegas to highway 10 (Blythe, CA) for NSXPO2015, and am wondering if anyone here has driven this highway 95 lately.
What shape is the road in? Google maps, street view looks a like the road isnt in the best of shape and info is 5 year old in places.
I am just looking for a more scenic route as my drive including the leg before Vegas is via Highway I-15 for ~21 hours. I figure I will be sick of Interstate highway driving by then.

Did it a few years ago, though you may want to consider 95 to the 62 to the 10
Either way, it's quite boring... maybe plan a visit to the Hoover Dam in the early AM, since its close by, then circle back and drive your route down to Palm Springs
I wouldn't exactly call it scenic except for the novelty of a barren desert landscape
